The resolution passed 35–25 with 2 abstentions. Aaron Withe opened the debate arguing that government-sector unions prioritize political power and dues collection over workers and taxpayers. He described their agenda as ranging from anti-American to socialist, cited Franklin Roosevelt’s historical skepticism of public-sector bargaining, and pointed to the 2018 Supreme Court decision in Janus v. AFSCME, which held that compulsory public-sector agency fees violate the First Amendment. Yale students answered with defenses of unions — especially teachers’ unions — as necessary in rural and lower-income districts, as supports for academic standards, and as historically important labor institutions.
