A lot of character ages in Gundam are kind of complete bullshit, but I do think it's very important for Char, Bright (the whole White Base crew tbh), and Haman to be the exact ages that they are. Their improbable youth during these worldshaking events informs everything they do.

So I do think it's a bit this, but I think a lot of it is "3% possibilities are really hard to report"? There is a non-zero chance this is the start of something catastrophic and worldshaking. That genuinely might happen. But it still, even now, probably won't, so you might look like Chicken Little.

I think this is a noted tendency in long-running serialized and anthologized SF stories: without incredibly disciplined editing, you end up in an endless game of one-upsmanship where every new opponent is more worldshaking than the last and it all just turns into white noise at the end.
