A low chuckled cracked across their little commlink. “No hard feelings.” “What for shooting your pretty little fighter down? Glad to hear it. I kinda thought—” Warning lights started flashing, and pulse lasfire streaked past. X grabbed the yoke with both hands, but buy the time she was pulling up to spin into an evasive maneuver, she was already spinning from a blown engine. “Mother******!” She hit the decelerator, hard, her hand flying across the flight computer’s inputs, dialing in compensation for the missing thruster. “Always keep an ace up your sleeve!” Fyrefly cackled into the mic. The antique fighter flew ahead, gaining a rapid lead, the pilot’s manic laughter squealing over X’s tinny speakers.

The Queer Writers Prompt is to share a snippet featuring something "breaking" - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP 'The Canary' featuring the word 'breaking' - Outside the sun was just setting, the edge of the horizon colored ochre and magenta as the navy night pushed the light lower into the sky. I smiled at the dusky palette as I descended the slope towards the cemetery. Bekah wanted to hang out where there weren't cameras or prying eyes. I could hardly blame her. Though, I knew it wasn't because she was scared of getting caught. Since the curfew had laced the night hours with rule breaking thrills, Bekah had taken to scampering out far more than usual. She texted me as she was halfway across town, promising to gift me another one of her short stories when she arrived. I was happy she still wanted to be around me despite everything going on. Still, I couldn't shake the feeling things were off. I knew grief came in a variety of shapes but hers looked absent. All I could offer was to support her until she felt like she could finally let it out.

Five years grunting and sweating, or five years mining laprocrystal. “What if I don’t want to do either one?” She shrugs. “The Zotobrotstad Community Hospital for Patients with Infectious Anal Firewarts is always in need of more palliative unguent applicators.” You shudder. The woman smirks and pushes the form and pen across the table to you. “Fill this out, sign at the bottom, and we can get you transferred to the appropriate sector to start your orientation.”

I keep one eyebrow raised as I pile pancakes onto my plate. I catch a glimpse of the day’s front page news on the table: PRINCE LIATH SETS SAIL IN SEARCH OF SPOUSE and roll my eyes. Emperor Ilderhart’s only child, Liath, is Veldera’s most eligible debauched bachelor. His longest exclusive relationship famously lasted for an entire week before he was caught in a threesome with a pair of handsome rich boys from the country. With the emperor and empress getting on in years, and Veldera in need of heirs and a stable lineage, the pressure for Liath to settle down and pick a royal partner has risen to a fever pitch of late. So naturally, Liath has chosen the most outrageous path to altar possible: he (or his advisors, more like) is choosing twelve promising suitors to accompany him on a month long voyage at sea, along with a retinue of courtiers, entertainers, chefs, and scribes to document the entire thing. When his ship returns to the docks of the Scintillant City...

Maybe that’s why she suggested the surgery to shut down Alice’s pain sensors. The science team complied. They wanted to make the rest of Alice’s time as comfortable as possible. At least, that was the official reason. Unofficially, they just wanted to see if they could do it.

Some fairies like Piko, Chu and Shadow just needed one element to fully recuperate. Other fairies like Pixxy and Icy Eyes needed two. People needed an innumerable amount of elements! Icy Eyes was impressed by how people managed to stay alive for any length of time, never mind be immortal like fairies. He used to think something similar about Pixxy… He closed his eyes and shook his head. Pixxy’s life was no less grand for being blind. A multi-element fairy’s life was no less grand for needing multiple elements. Ergo, peoples’ lives were no less grand for all their necessities either. Icy Eyes only wished that Madic would let others help faer with them. That same hardiness that felled the Primal Triumvirate and kept faer companions alive long enough to clear faer name could also prevent fae from requesting or accepting assistance.

Little liquid miners drilled into the cobblestone streets of Fairy Central. Aqua tendrils creeped into the cracks. Wind and rain ripped through leaves and their shivering trees. However, the dragon skull house just outside the square was cozy and dry. The flames in the fireplace were pink and thick and smelled like cotton candy. They cackled and danced through the night, mocking the rain outside. They were as indomitable as the fairy who’d summoned them. half body of a four-tailed, coil-haired fox with a magical girl wand. a giant heart with a music sheet has music notes and flames on it. one music note ends in a flame and has a heart inside it. wavy spikes surround it. Xs in the bkg. fox walking across stone wall. lamps, pond, plants, and stars in the background. fox has flaming fist mark on flank. flame marks on forepaws and eyes. heart marks on tail tips and hind paws. tourbanette. curly hair and neck floof. four tails. I like how colors shimmer over the rain on the roads. Reds and greens from traffic lights, whites from speed limits, and honeys from streetlights. The shadows of trees blurring in the water. I like the smell of water and mist while my window wipers are flailing like Kermit. I like jamming out to my current favorites right before a mid-to-me song sneaks in. Kinda like how I sneak in a poem before work. “Sir, (I can’t believe I’m saying this), but you need to pay less attention to the road while you’re driving.”

And the monster pouted with a dramatic lip, “What a pity, his sweet song is stymied.” Its eyes flashed again and it leaned to smile at Faerai, “Oh, but you asked for a voice little Reaper, yes? How is this,” To Delgrij again it stared, its eyes too hungry, too eager, “Up to my bedchambers now, Nectar, that I might taste your sweet ag—” “No!” Faerai cut it off, shoving against Delgrij’s legs as he turned to leave, “No, Delgrij stay, stay!” The monster stood. “You are protected from my tongue, youngling,” it ground, its words chasmal in their rage as it stomped toward her, “but if you interfere I will forget my vow to—” There was a pop and a crash and all of the monster’s rage dropped with its broad shoulders and pointed chin. “Needles off Parni or I’s chomp the rest a yous cracked face!” Mitra crackled. Faerai grinned at the bright violet flash and flicker beside the monster, though coated in burnt black streaks she did not recognize. So small she burned, hardly as big as one of its eyes, yet the little light’s voice had stopped it as sudden as any wall. “Sister,” The monster sang, turning to face Mitra with two spread arms and a voice like syrup, “Goodlight, goodlight, ever so delighted to see you whole!” “Stuffs it,” She cracked, flicking a smile at Faerai before turning hot eyes on her brother, “Thems be me shines, ans yous promised!”

Only by some intuition did he know it was an angel, because what he actually saw was a white man wearing a black business suit, on fire, floating outside his window.
