I know I've posted these data before, but today #wundergrad Will and I re-coded the analysis in a much more robust way, so that he can quickly re-generate the graph as he adds more data! #figaday 5.085/n #year5

Not quite at true "figure" stage yet, but prepping #UExM samples for #wundergrad Will and you can see the declines in phycoerythrin over time with starvation, from left to right, in our fixed samples. #figaday 5.082/n #year5

We're still improving model accuracy, but it's so great to have an automated pipeline built by #wundergrad Jonatan that quickly annotates the volumes of dozens expanded cells. Nice to see reps hang together w/ some variation across strains when bacterial-volume normalized. #figaday 5.071/n #year5

How many days have I been on this airplane? Is it time for another figure yet? #wundergrad Will's added another experimental treatment since I've been gone, and remains undaunted by the number of samples he still has to count to estimate ingestion rates. #figaday 5.069/n #year5

This work could not have been completed without the help of wundergrad Ryan Wang, who led all the work on PPO annotation curation and analysis, and the inimitable @bernardkim.bsky.social, who built the most comprehensive Drosophilidae species phylogeny to date for this study (406 species)!

#Wundergrad Will is churning through literally hundreds of fixed samples to generate functional response data. I have a feeling.... feeding history isn't going to matter. Which is super valuable insight but also a bit unexciting for him. #figaday 5.052/n #year5

Switching gears a little bit to brag about how consistent #wundergrad Will's control growth rates are. If this holds, it could mean we don't need to constantly run controls, which could be the difference between having to count 15 vs. 27 flasks a day! #figaday 5.046/n #year5

We started a new #wundergrad project asking whether Mesodinium eat more when they're hungry. Will said, "This is the first time I've ever been excited about the result of a t-test." (The answer: "Marginally, the opposite?!") #figaday 5.032/n #year5

Let the #ASMicrobe FOMO begin…. Thanks to everyone posting here! And check out Jean Lim and Aly Rogers’ poster on RNA viruses associated with Karenia brevis harmful algal blooms in Florida. #7239 EEB-P-001 – EEB01 Friday Microbial Ecology. Wundergrad Aly will be giving the lightning talk!

A great showing from current and former USF College of Marine Science researchers at the Florida RESTORE Act Centers of Excellence Program (FLRACEP) meeting this week. Especially proud of 1st year PhD student Alexis Mitchem and wundergrad Arianna Rodriguez for their great presentation!

Is it even summer if we’re not spinning up #wundergrad #Mesodinium experiments? #figaday 5.020 #year5

Seventh paper acceptance of the year to #wundergrad Alan Sheu, who learned to code in FORTRAN as a first-year undergrad, implemented fully metabolically plastic mixotrophs in a full-on upper ocean biogeochemical model (COBALT), and wrote a 38 page, beautifully formatted response to reviewers!

I'm always determined to stay awake on the long flight home from Europe, and coding this analysis was one way to do so. Of course, #wundergrad Jonatan is sure to figure out how to do this in a fraction of the time... #figaday 4.310/n #year4

Congratulations to #wundergrad Amelie L'Etoile-Goga for receiving a Goldwater Scholarship for her exceptional research as an undergraduate scholar! (If you're in the US and don't know what the Goldwater is, it's worth looking up and encouraging your junior lab members to apply.)

Now threading these... [from a couple weeks ago] Second paper acceptance of the year to #wundergrad Amelie L'Etoile-Goga! Her lovely quantification of #Mesodinium grazing preferences is coming out soon in The Journal of Phycology.

We love ourselves a Saturday night raining-in-the-lab party! 🤣😇😭 So grateful for #wundergrad Amelie for working late and catching this. @jsharbro.bsky.social's mop came in just in time.

Grantwriting always gives you a nice perspective on the group's recent work, and I just am *so so so* excited about this crop of #wundergrad papers. Alan Sheu just submitted a lovely ms on mixotrophs in an upper ocean biogeochemical model that I hope will fare well in review. #figaday 4.245/n #year4

Out today in JTB! Grateful for Eleanor Caves and her brilliant ideas, #wundergrad Jonatan Kaare-Rasmussen (the #cubletito) who wanted "a quick paper" in math-bio, and the ever-clever Dr. Raine Detmer's simulation guidance. #figaday 4.244/n #year4 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

First paper acceptance of the year goes to #wundergrad Jonatan Kaare-Rasmussen (a.k.a. cubletito)! Excited to share his work on how fish behavior impacts cleaning station distribution when it's in press at Journal of Theoretical Biology!

The world is on fire but at least we have this lovely sticker design. Integral mama quail and her emotive babies sketched by postdoc Clarissa Frederica; mathematical accoutrements (pencil; coffee; math daydreams) and some aesthetics by #wundergrad Alan Sheu.

Ternary search algorithms, but in 2D? We're not sure, but #wundergrad Vela will surely figure it out soon. #figaday 4.053/n #year4

Two #wundergrad lab members submitted their first first-author papers in the last two weeks, and I feel like the luckiest PI in the whole wide world ✨🌟
