iirc, "tomate" in Spanish comes from "tomatl" in Nahuatl; "tomatillo" means "little tomate", which yes, very logical.
but "tomatl" actually refers to the tomatillo! the Nahuatl word for tomato is "xītomatl", meaning not "big tomatl" but "flayed tomatl", cause they're naked.

Might surprise you but "tomato" does not come from Italy, not the plant, nor the word. It comes from the Mexican (náhuatl) word xitomatl, in some places found as xic-tomatl.
