In unicode, you can change a letter between upper and lowercase by XORing with 0x20.

What does a lowercase emoji look like?

Happy becomes Angry

Car becomes “No pedestrians”

"what's a reverse bunny suit" well you see you take the parts of a bunny suit that would be uncovered and cover them, and then you take the covered parts and uncover them. It's like XORing your fill tool

Under my new proposal, it will be illegal for anyone to xor two numbers, or supply software to enable the xoring of two numbers. This will be an effective means to prevent bad actors from using xor
Exactly. You could basically say I’m fine with encryption in many instances, but I don’t agree with the opposition to having a means to unencrypt certain information if authorities obtain a warrant. I think the risks from gov get overstated and the harms enabled by these technologies are understated

I solved this by saving the background under each person in its restore buffer, drawing the person, then XORing its restore buffer. That way, "erasing" the drawn person wouldn't just blindly save/overwrite onto the background, it would XOR the drawn person away, and overlaps cleaned themselves up.

Eww, XORing someone with themselves must be an unspeakably gruesome way to kill

That was a nice read. I wonder what the sprite masking technique was? Don't think Xoring on a 1-Bit screen would work?

I'm sure I chucked it through the disassembler not long ago, and IIRC the sprites had interleaved masks but weren't zigzagged.

i know, i know, the best code is the code that ships. but i'm sitting here confounded by how inefficient this is.

they actually do things *extra* inefficiently; see if you can spot where.

brb xoring a copyrighted work together with n randomly generated one-time pads, and taking the result and all n possible xors of every pad but one across n different borders. I dare you to figure out which jurisdiction I'm pirating in.
IMO, the most common/damaging misconception about AI that is widely held is that it is either clear that AI models contain copyright-protected works, or that it is clear that they do not contain copyright-protected works.

It's wrong because "what is a copy" lacks clear, bright-line rules.
What is the most common/damaging misconception that is most widely held, and why is it wrong?

we know the ciphertext blocks (because we chose them) we know the plaintext blocks (they are exfiltrated via I_PCM screen pixels), then it's just a matter of XORing

someone said actually XORing them together is mathematically sound!

Is xoring something with itself just quicker than setting to 0?

I went from Spectrum => Amiga, so it was quite the opposite - what? I can just fire and forget? No manually masking the backgrounds and manually XORing everywhere!? AND I can overlay different colours?!

yeag, rotating numbers and also adding and xoring them, after midnight

I pasted their exploit into emacs. They try to obfuscate it by XORing the real code with an included 12-byte key and turning that into a hex string. This is the same technique I used to "encrypt" something when I was 10 years old

this one seems to be some RNG code in C, written by Carl Ellison from 1995 (and provided with Schneier's Applied Cryptography). Specifically it is from "RANG.C".

Nice!

@HoneyLabs released Akin, an open HTTP request fingerprint. It records which of 32 fixed headers a client sent as a bitmask, so XORing two tokens tells you which headers differ. (Merely hashing header names can't give you that.)

They used it to link one favicon-sweeping visitor across 21 […]

The (non-cryptographic) hash function we used is FNV-1a which is simple and fast but works by XORing and multiplying, which pushes information from low bits to high bits. This makes the low bits ~linear in the input, and the result was 97% of all write volume being routed to one worker.
