HIMES: You spent $10b to try to lower the yield on the 10 year bond. When you started, it was 4.8%. Today it's at a 20 year high of 5.04%. A 20 basis point rise. Was your intervention successful?

BESSENT: Yes

H: Wait- it went up by 20 points!

B: There's a counterfactual of what would it have done

This ok? Or more important the NZ Govt bond yield is a fraction of a basis point lower than it otherwise would be? That's the choice.

Yes and no. Seems we avoided the cascading failures of a collapse of the basis trade and so forth.

But the only concrete part of Trump's plan was "lower the yield on 10-year Treasury bonds." Instead it jumped up and hasn't retreated much, even with below-expected CPI inflation data.

The 10 year Treasury yield has shot up to 4.45% and the 30-year is close to 5%. Here’s my attempt from yesterday to explain why even the biggest and safest bond market now seems to be creaking. TLDR: the liquidation of massively leveraged hedge fund trades. on.ft.com/3R748hN

All for the sake of a smidgen of a skerrick of a basis point lower in the Government bond yield and (maybe) mortgage rates.
If you care about governments being held accountable, then you need to know about disastrous cuts being planned for Archives NZ and the National Library.

These cuts don't just make it much harder to do history. They undermine the institutions at the heart of our democracy.
Newsroom talked to PHANZA President Matthew Woodbury about further cuts at the National Library and Archives NZ.

He says "It’s only when one zooms out that you can see the effect of all of these cuts. These institutions ... are critical cultural infrastructure."

NEW: "The benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield
popped 7 basis points to 5.058%, a level not seen since July 2007." Reminder: 2007 was Great Recession. We are the band on the Titanic. But corporate media fears fears criticizing the economy or Trump will ban them.

Here’s a neat trick for those wishing to track high yield spreads on StockCharts. Because HYGH hedges HYG’s Treasury risk, plotting it inversely on a price-only basis (using -_HYGH) closely matches BofA’s high yield OAS index.
