Every fossil fuel shock drives Europeans toward EVs. Ukraine 2022. Iran 2026. Same pattern.

When prices hurt, people look for the exit.

We could have declared "100% zerocarbon" this morning when renewables+nuclear were generating 100% of UK consumption.

As usual this drove our price down, so exports up, and we had to run gas just to power the exports.

NESO set hard target that ZCO has to include exports as well as UK demand.

Honestly, I think what this shows really well is actually that painful fossil fuel crises are not a good, persistent, sustainable and structural way to spur long-term consumer interest in electrified alternatives.

«The decline in demand is coming much faster than Norway realises. Drilling for more oil and gas, like the Norwegian government is thirsting for in the vulnerable areas of the Arctic, is simply no longer necessary.»

In 2015, OPEC projected that the world would have ~1.9 million EVs by the year 2022

In the year 2022, the world had ~25.9 million EVs 🧐

This is tactical pessimism: projections designed to sell a story and preserve profits in the short term -->

Europe’s dependence on synthetic fertilisers is also a dependence on fossil gas.

Between 2019–2024, €16.4bn was spent on fertiliser that generated no food, while synthetic nitrogen use caused an estimated €233.7bn in environmental damage.
