It took over 4 years, but the paper is finally published. In this study, we developed novel methods drawn from #LegalEpidemiology to map addiction #stigma in California law.

This #interdisciplinary work was conceptually and methodologically difficult!⤵️

It's almost as if a society with a 1000-yo history of institutionalized Jew hatred operating at the highest levels of its governing structure has an ongoing problem with Jews.

(I am an Anglophile but we're not going to deny history here)

Trying desperately to find good espionage media to watch we decided to dip into the 1970s and tried out "Three Days of the Condor" with Robert Redford and Faye Subway and had to turn it off halfway through b/c it was both asinine AND offensive

Hard to say for all time, but definitely my current favorite.

For sure, it's dangerous

Very cool. I'm sure you'll be busy, but happy to treat you to a coffee if you have a moment.

About a month into my foundational health law class in US law school, I asked with despair, "How is anyone supposed to understand all of this? Even the experts can't really navigate it effectively."

I love this essay from Walter Glannon that undermines neuroreductionism so thoroughly

OUR BRAINS ARE NOT US
Many neuroscientists have claimed that our minds are just a function of and thus reducible to our brains. I challenge neuroreductionism by arguing that the mind emerges from and is shaped by interact...

The "brain in a vat" idea is so outdated & naive. It's not just electrical activity a brain processes. Contemporary neuroscience is clear that the entire body constructs our experience in manifold ways.
What about the middle ground, a brain in the vat? If human brain in a vat receives from a computer the exact electrical inputs that would come from being connected to eyes looking at a sunset or a tongue and jaw chewing up a steak would that also just be a simulation or would it then be real?

General agreement. October is my favorite month by far and I live in a cold -weather city and 80F+ just ruins the entire thing for me
SO I'M GOING TO DECLARE ANYTHING AT OR ABOVE 80° IN OCTOBER "ULTRAHEAT" BECAUSE THAT SHIT IS BULLLLLLSHIT AND WE COLORADANS DESERVE BETTER (ARIZONA Y'ALL SIGNED UP FOR THIS CRAP). THIS SUCKS! FUCK THIS! MY AC UNIT DID NOTHING TO DESERVE THIS!

You are so kind, Dr. G! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Enjoy the time!

I feel this, having never had a sabbatical or research leave to speak of (maybe one 6-week fellowship?) and currently in a 2-week intensive that is the equivalent of teaching a 2 hr seminar every day

excellent thread
apropos of this latest round I will just mention that there has been antisemitism on the left since the beginning. the people who invented anticapitalism did so in an environment in which Judaism had been equated with bad economic practices for 600 years already. AND they didn’t know any Jews
so much of this comes down to leftists who have barely interacted with Jews imo. it's also why NYC DSA gets singled out as 'zionist' or insufficiently anti-zionist, because it's our one large chapter where this is least the case.
Just asked Victor Wembanyama if he’d ever consider promoting a sports betting company.

“Absolutely not. I will never do that. Honestly, I think it's very sad to see some players promote it. .. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”
