Working on Sir Launfal at the moment and it is fascinating how badly Thomas Chestre messes this up. It’s such a good and engaging tale, how could you possibly make such a simple narrative so incongruous and glaringly incoherent?
An anecdotal but entirely true thing: as someone who studies medieval romance, I spend a lot of time retelling medieval romances. I have never yet failed to get the reaction I/the plot am/is seeking.
