France is extremely lucky the US and British suck up most of the oxygen when discussing empires, because, boy howdy are the actions of France quite…bad…shall we say.
Its not that they hadn't been paying pensions as such but rather that they had frozen rates at the level in place at time of independence so they were massively and unevenly devalued across former colonies. The updating of the rates was only a partial solution and loads of inequalities persisted.

Also France has never really accepted the loss of its empire.
France's relationship with historiography and its national narratives (especially Empire!) is a lot worse than I think most people know. A colleague told me earlier this year that France only officially acknowledged the service of French Caribbean soldiers in 2009(?)

It’s a underrated fact the France still plays bullshit imperialism games in Africa today. Part of the reason there is a stumbling block to creating a joint European military command outside NATO is because of this.

Eh, German-style unions seem like they'd be fine on this. The purely adversarial nature of unions is the biggest problem--obviously you can't get perfect cooperation but board representation goes a long way in encouraging long-termism that includes actually training your fucking employees.
