Most of us ask clients for "a quick review".

Clare Lucas of Ducks In A Row asks four better questions instead: What were you looking for? How did you feel then? What have we done? And how do you feel now?

Those answers write your marketing for you.

You open up your email marketing tool and stare at the blank box.

It's not that you've nothing to say. The tool hands you the hard part: what to write.

Try keeping a note on your phone of what customers ask you. Next time you need an email, the idea's there.

I ran my business on ‘just enough’ for years. It was a terrible way to fund a retirement.

Nobody is topping up a pension for us. So where does the money come from?

There are five dials inside your business, and you only have to move each one a little.

How Solo Directors Fund Their Own Retirement
Your business probably won’t sell, and no employer is topping up a pension for you. These five dials inside your business will fund your retirement instead.

You book someone in, mean to send the confirmation, then the day runs away with you.

To you it's a small job still on the list. To them, the silence starts to feel like it isn't happening.

Try to send it the moment you book them in.

Two businesses with identical profits can sell for very different prices.

A buyer pays a premium for your systems and for what your CRM knows about your customers.

So try documenting your processes and getting what's in your head into that CRM.

For years I said yes to anything a client asked for. It felt like good service.

But the work I'm brilliant at kept getting crowded out by work anyone could have done.

So I drew three lines: what I'm best at, what sits alongside it, and what I turn down.

Business coaches ask if your business could survive three months without you.

But I'd ask it the other way round: could you survive three months without your business?

Illness or injury doesn't ask permission. Try working out what it would really cost you.

Your goodbye at the end of a job might only take you thirty seconds. But then you get three phone calls.

Every one of them answers something the goodbye should have covered.

Try slowing the handover down: get them to explain it back in their own words.

When someone gets in touch, we can jump straight to the price. But most people aren't ready to buy yet.

Just a number in an empty quote gives them nothing to go on, so they disappear.

Try something useful instead: a guide, or a reason to keep talking.

When do you ask for reviews?

If it's only once at the end, to you it's a quick favour. To them it's a request out of nowhere, from someone they haven't heard from since the invoice.

Mention its importance at the sales meeting, so the ask is a promise kept.

Somebody decides they need help. Months later, they still haven't gone ahead.

Those months aren't nothing to them. They're weighing it up, and life gets in the way.

But whoever's still there when they've convinced themselves wins the work.

They pictured the job done by the weekend, and you were thinking three weeks. But neither of you said that number out loud.

Try agreeing the realistic timeline in the sales conversation.

A timeline you both agreed to is more like you than one you each assumed.

Last year 726,000 UK companies came off the UK Companies House register. Fewer than 1,000 sold for enough to put £1m in a director's pocket.

So what happened to the other 725,000?

I looked at the numbers behind it. It has changed how I think I'll exit my business.

It Doesn't End Like That
A few weeks ago I posted a short about the number nobody’s worked out. Somewhere there’s a financial figure that means you could stop working, and most of us have never sat down and calculated it.

If you sell in every email, people stop opening them. If you never do, there's nothing to remember you by.

Try mixing in the questions people actually ask you, and the stories that answer them.

A mix of help and offers is more like you than always pitching or going quiet.

Most websites lead with qualifications but your customer is wondering if you'll tidy up afterwards.

Try answering what they're too polite to ask: how you'll clean up, and what it'll really cost.

Answering that worry is more like you than a wall of credentials

For years, no decision I made grew the value of my business. I was focused on the next project.

Then I asked five exited owners what they sold for, and I now model the one with the highest exit.

A business built to sell is more like you than one that's just a job.

Your CRM knows who's due for a review. But does it ever nudge you to ask them?

Try one trigger: when you mark a job as complete, schedule the review request to be sent.

A tool that remembers is more like what you'd want to do than manually remembering.

When a job ends, do you chase new customers while that happy one drifts away?

Try spotting what they could do next with you, then offer it.

Doing more with someone who values you sounds more like you than starting over.

If your best reviews only ever arrive by chance, is it because asking never became a habit?

Try making the ask a fixed step, like the invoice - same words, every job.

A review you asked for sounds more like you than waiting and hoping.

There's a financial number that means you could retire early, and most never work it out.

Try working backwards from the retirement you want to work out the exit number you need from your business.

A clean exit is more like you than working until you drop.

Most no-shows aren't rudeness. Life can get in the way, and nobody reminded them.

Try a message the day before that reminds them of the time, place, and a task to think about.

In your own words, it sounds more like you than any calendar bot.

To your customer, your price is just a number. They see the figure, not the context.

Try wrapping three lines around it: what's included, what happens next, how to say yes.

Same price, but the words sound more like you than a bare number.

A website template hands you empty pages, not the words.

But you already know them. Try answering the five questions customers ask: price, timing, trust, mess, what's next.

A downloaded guide is a request for help. But with no next step, your silence kills it.

Try one message the day after: did it help, and what are you working on now?

A friendly question sounds more like you than a guide that goes nowhere.

Asking a happy customer for more work can feel pushy, so we wait. But that can seem like disinterest.

Try mentioning the one thing you'd do next if you were them.

That's helping, and it sounds more like you than selling or silence.
