inactivations reveal a clear distinction of labor.

One year ago, The Radiant Sea appeared in print!
Still super happy with how it turned out. Our mission to share a different view of ocean life seems to have succeeded.💙
Named a top ten photography book of 2025 by @smithsonianmag.bsky.social, and many anecdotes from people who appreciated it. 🙏 🌊🧪🦑
Our science photo book The Radiant Sea is out Sept 2nd!!
30 years of research, 10 years of "we should", and a year of collating pix and writing.
Sönke and I show (mostly for the first time) images of how organisms produce, use, and interact with light in the sea. #bioluminescence #fluorescence 🦑🧪🌊

The battle to keep global heating from passing the agreed 1.5-degree threshold has been lost.

This should be an era when human ingenuity works to save the planet from catastrophe.

Instead the tech broligarchy is busy embarking upon ludicrous AI data centre “infrastructure” fuelled by coal and gas.

In May it was big news when 100+ suspicious images were found in Thermo Fisher's catalog. Now, that number has expanded dramatically to 18,000+, thanks to some arduous searching by @reeserichardson.bsky.social.

My reporting on the massive trove and its implications for antibody reliability:
More than 18,000 questionable images found in antibody catalogues of 15 companies
Science sleuth’s findings raise questions for researchers working to improve the reliability of commercial antibodies.

say what you will about the myriad valid concerns with current LLMs but I personally will never get over the fact that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted to his literal death for downloading JSTOR and then a decade later, they downloaded & ingested the entire world and our IP laws just went ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The largest cause of deforestation is, and has been, the expansion of farmland. But the production of which products, in particular, has been driving this in recent decades?

A recent study, published in Nature Food by Chandrakant Singh and Martin Persson, answered this question.

I am happy to announce my very first senior author paper! Serotonin is known to abolish UP-DOWN state dynamics, which occur during sleep and anesthesia. There are several outstanding questions: What happens at short latencies? How widespread across the brain is it? 🧠
