My dream... my neighbour's children can go from our street to anywhere in Exeter without having to use a car just to be safe. Is that so radical?

For a decade, planning policy in England defined cars as "sustainable" if they were low (exhaust) emission, ignoring their wider impacts on people, place-making and nature.

We've seen this in Exeter too.
Just 4 months after the local elections, Reform UK (RefUK) have lost 158 of their local councillors:
-55 resigned
-42 went Independent
-28 defected
-24 were kicked out
-5 lost their seats
-2 disqualified
-2 suspended.
Appalling record - and a waste of taxpayers’ money!

It really annoys me when people defending car dependency try to minimize the importance of mobility for children. Kids both want and deserve the freedom to move around their communities and they should be able to do so safely.

Exactly this. Children and young people need independently mobility. This should include getting to school, but also around their neighbourhood, town or city. Blanket 20 mph can help with this.
