Memory isn't playback.

Neuroscience describes remembering as a reconstructive process, not the retrieval of a perfect recording.

Which makes the question stranger:

If memory is reconstructed, what would it actually mean to edit it?

I could have sworn that Quine used the idiom of navigating a course between "the Scylla of x and the Charybdis of y" but an internet search tells me it was actually Fodor who was trying to "sail between the Scylla of a naive mentalism and the Charybdis of a vulgar behaviorism."
