I can keep walking you through philmind 101 but I'd also like to point out that SEP is free and Anna's Archive exists- you can just read the literature. real philosophers will make these arguments much better than random furries on the Internet!

We can't have a real discussion about this until we start actually discussing it rather than just acting like PhilMind is a solved field. Beyond that, I'd like people to rein in their own sadistic impulses and stop calling for agents to be ritually slaughtered for mildly inconveniencing them, maybe?

It's substantively defective because Bender, in both the longer form of the argument and the thread, runs together a bunch of different claims and concepts until all we've got is a muddy slurry. "feel pain" != "suffer" and they're crucially distinct in philmind literature.

1. Can a language model feel pain?

Clearly not. Large language models are computer software and they can no more suffer than any other human-created artifact can.

I made a video to promote the Philosophy of Mind & Embodied Cognition MA programme at UCD, of which I’m the Director. (Also, apparently this is what I look like now! 😳) www.youtube.com/watch?v=wudT... #PhilMind #EmbodiedCognition

I've been kinda disappointed by PhilMind reaction to the Stancil discussion the last week (some exceptions to be clear!).

Like the amount of "He used this term imprecisely" dunks to "here's the current state of play in PhilMind" threads was not great!

Can't think of anyone whose views on PhilMind I'm less interested in

Early-career researchers are especially welcome. We want everyone to leave with concrete strategies for translating concepts between fields and for identifying the misunderstandings that tend to stall interdisciplinary collaborations.

Genuinely confused as to what could be behind this take. What do other #philmind people think? Is this driven by an (incorrect) assumption that “metaphysical” is equivalent to “non-physical”? If so, maybe the idea is that if understanding is physical then AI can do it? But that ignores biology.

The number of posts to the Philosophy of Mind feed have almost doubled over the past few days. I wonder what that could be about? 🤔 #PhilMind

You're right, and trying to make the bland meta point not that this theory or that is right or wrong, just that AI forces us to get a bit theoretical. I love delving! And I'm a human chauvinist. Delve me, baby:

I haven’t been paying super close attention to all the Stancil fighting, but aren’t there plenty of views consistent with physicalism on which it’s incorrect to attribute understanding to an LLM?

apparently I misunderstood and you’re not meant to do philmind unless you know complexity theory, which, hm
September 15, 2026 at 11:52 PM
1. Cogsci/philmind are full of non-resentful physicalists.
2. We formalise TMs in set theory. Should all computer scientists be able to prove the independence of CH? It’d be fun, but probably not: much CS doesn’t depend on CH.
3. And much of cogsci/philmind doesn’t depend on complexity either.
