Technology, design, complexity, and critical thinking, with an underlying theme of balancing human behavior, automation, and systems thinking
The #Design process is the #Thinking process - Anything you offload to an #LLM is something you don't know

(1/3) Love this #AI-assistance checklist from Lars Faye:
1. If I did not have access to an AI tool, could I still accomplish this?
2. Am I using the model to deepen my understanding, or expedite the answer?
3. If I had to audit/verify the generated output, could I explain what was happening?

#AI can make the #UI. It cannot yet understand or design what the UI means.

You cannot #Automate what you do not #Understand. Defining processes, e.g., #UserJourneys; understanding #Goals, defining #Entities and properties, meaning and #Constraints is #UX's role. Defining the #Ontology is the job.

I think I am more aligned with #HerbertSimon & #AllenNewell in saying #LLMs and their ilk are #ComplexInformationProcessers rather than #JohnMcCarthy #ArtificialIntelligence

Being an #Expert in one field (e.g., #Language) doesn’t make you an expert in all fields - or why #LLMs can't solve #WorldModel problems

I couldn't agree more with S. Goedecke
For many tasks, the #human is the bottleneck, not the #LLM, because the difficult part is in #communicating to the LLM exactly what kind of solution the human wants. The information is “in the model” already, but it takes a very #SmartHuman to pull it out.

Highlighting isn’t reading comprehension. Studies show it barely improves retention.

Summarizing in your own words does.

"At first, #AI sucks you in. You really do become #MoreProductive when using it. But then it threatens to hollow you out, as you become #LessCapable and #LessKnowledgeable." --David Brooks

Completely agree...

"For routine predictable work might make sense to delegate to a virtual #copilot / assistant. But when you’re shooting for extraordinary outcomes, perhaps the best bet is to equip human #experts with new superpowers."

Heard on a #WorldCup game tonight…

“The ref knows the #rules of the game without #understanding the game.“

Reminds me of #LLMs There is a gap between #memorization and #strategic execution. #LLMs know how pieces move, but lack the situational awareness needed to win/adapt.

The world is not made of words
@drfeifei.bsky.social

Just like the shadows on Plato's cave walls, #LLMs confuse semantic relationships with the world. And are completely unaware of actual objects.

New favorite term from @neurosciencenews.bsky.social

#EmptyMimicry: the act of copying the behaviors, aesthetics, or ideas of others without understanding the underlying concepts or reasons behind them. It results in hollow, unproductive outcomes because the substance of the action is missing.

Love this from Caleb Gross...
“If you’re going to use an LLM to write me an email, I’d much rather you just send me the prompt; at least then I’d have an idea of what you actually meant to say.”

The hard part of #UX_Design has never been the creating of a UI. It was building a working #MentalModel of the #Domain in your head first. The UI was simply an expression of that understanding. Acquiring the understanding was the job.

Using AI #ShortCircuits that understanding.

#InformationAsymmetry strikes again

Prediction market accuracy thus reflects the wisdom of an informed minority (~3%), not the #WisdomOfTheCrowd.

Prediction Market Accuracy: Crowd Wisdom or Informed Minority?
Prediction markets are remarkably accurate, yet the source of this accuracy remains poorly understood. The conventional view attributes it to crowd wisdom, wher

Adrian Levy raises an important question every product manager needs to consider:

If you built "your" product today, from scratch, knowing what AI can do — would it look anything like what you have?

I see a lot of posts talking about #FreeIntelligence with #AI. But is it really free if it suppresses #System1 and circumvents #System2? Will it lead to #CognitiveSurrender (Shaw & Nave 2026)? There is always a cost.

Things that make you go hmmm

War and Peace, which is just shy of 600,000 words, would probably cost very close to a million tokens

"When we say that AI systems “hallucinate,” we implicitly confer on them a capacity for experience. If we must use a human analogy, it would be far better to say that they “confabulate.” In humans, confabulation involves making things up without realizing it." @anilseth.bsky.social
