We worked really hard to prevent Y2K from happening and there was this sense of anticlimax like, "Nothing happened, so was that it? Is history ACTUALLY over?" And then a monkey's paw curled.
Like here’s what isn’t remembered. The year 2000 was supposed to be this epochal year. It was NOT. It was like a year of margarine in culture. And that sense of “that’s all we get” created this vibe.

What if the AI labs are trying to get their LLMs to loop into making new and improved models, but like everything else they're just very bad to middling at it, so they claim to investors that we're at rapid self-improvement when in reality it's more like automated self-sabotage
