#Alimoche de 3° año, si nadie sugiere lo contrario 😉, su pico ya ha comenzado a teñir de amarillo el gris azulado que caracteriza a los juveniles. Los cambios de plumaje de las aves en función de la edad y la época del año es un auténtico reto.

It was such a treat to find these gorgeous little green cup mushrooms in the forest this morning. Usually all I can ever find is the bright turquoise mycelia in the rotting wood. Finding the thumbnail size fruiting bodies is pretty rare for me. Their colour is unreal. 🍄🌿

Two odd looking shorebirds wading in shallow water covered with splotches of thick, gooey looking algae. They are long-billed dowitchers and Merlin describes them as, "Plump, medium-sized shorebirds with very long bills." They have really intricately colored plumage on their backs and wings that I find really difficult to describe. I'm gonna say the pattern looks almost like asymmetrical fish scales that are mostly almost black but with a thin white border around the ends. The breast and shoulders look a little salmon colored around the shoulders and sides and turning much lighter towards the breast. The bill fairly thick but not enough to make you think "thick" over "slender" and is about 2/3 the length of the rest of the birds body.

#BirdOfTheDay theme of #Borbs from a couple of days ago. The first is a bobwhite on a barbed-wire fence that I spotted along a gravel road in rural Kansas. The other is a sharp-tailed grouse I found at one of the perimeter feeding stations of Sax-Zim Bog.
Bobwhite perched on a barbed-wire fence. It's back is to the camera but its little bobwhite face is facing to the right. Sharp-tailed grouse floofed up against the cold and standing in snow speckled discarded seed shells. Merlin describes them as, "Pale grayish-brown chickenlike birds ... with whitish tails with pointed tips, slight crests, wings spotted with white, and sparsely marked pale bellies." And they are very round when they floof their feathers to stay warm.
