I need more readers. More wild-eyed devoted fans who like horror and fantasy and weird stuff. More bizarre dreamers and fantastic fabulists. Anyway, give us a follow then.

The worst thing to be in America now is an intellectual. What a horrible feeling to know the house is burning while those around you are oblivious and stoke the flames.

Write the story you need to read.
Draw the picture you need to see.
Compose the song you need to hear.
Art is a feeling, a compulsion towards creation. Be courageous and make art today. #writing

Happy 250th Birthday, America! You don’t look a day over 200. Eat barbecue, smash tyranny, live free. #America250

What do you call it where you feel washed-up but you were never anything to begin with?

Accountability Report: Wrote 1,100 words today. Are they all keepers? Probably not, but the manuscript is now 19,000 words. That’s something at least. #writing

Accountability Report: Wrote 1,900 words today, a whole chapter. The manuscript is roughly 18,000 words. Not slowing down. Onward! #writing

Accountability Report: 940 words written today. Not as many as yesterday but another chapter is finished. Onward! #writing

If you like Widow’s Bay and you want something to read between seasons, I recommend my folk horror novel The Ocean Hugs Hard. Something sinister lurks amid the dunes and cottages: a string of murders, a secret cult, and a history the locals don’t talk about. #books

Write the stories that make you uncomfortable, the stories that challenge you, the stories that drag you out of bed at 2 a.m. Find that idea and nourish it into existence. Throw that little bastard kicking and screaming onto the page. #5amwritersclub

If you’ve had a teacher in your life who left a positive impact or opened the world of possibilities to you in any way, please let them know. Life is short and our old teachers won’t be around forever.

Writers are powerful beings. You choose what stories to tell, you choose how, you function on a creative wave few mortals understand. There’s pain. There’s loneliness. But there’s also a sense that your words are powerful convictions. #5amwritersclub

Yes, I’ll be going to StokerCon. Yes, I’ll have books to sign. Yes, there will be custom bookmarks. May even squeeze in some writing, too. ✍️

As the world collapses and society unraveles like a mothballed sweater, I can now say that I received five years of positive feedback from my students. Every semester they’ve enjoyed my teaching style, even the ones who hated English and writing said they liked my class. Yay teaching! #teaching

That feeling you get when you think of a better ending to your short story AFTER you submitted it. 😫

I don’t know what’s more disturbing, that I wrote a story about a serial killer or that the serial killer eats granola bars.

“Rage Room” sent to the publisher, secret cryptid manuscript printed for editing, and two short stories await my attention. #writing

I wrote 3,300 words today, a brand new short story!

Okay, writers! Let’s do this!

*screaming myself awake*

*consulting hastily-scribbled notes*

*brewing mug of wakey bean juice*

*slapping imagination in the face with a dead haddock*

*mining all that repressed trauma*

*primal screaming in front of open Word doc*

What’s the point of writing anymore? If some mediocrity craps out an AI-generated novel and sells it, what’s the point of sacrificing time and energy improving your writing through discipline and skill? When the AI slop sells better than a novel that took the writer time to write, why bother?

Write what you want even if others aren’t reading it. The void taunts you like your worst schoolyard bully. Most of the time you’ll fight for relevance in a world that doesn’t want your stories. And this indifference gnaws at your soul. #5amwritersclub

Word of the day: Antidisestablishmentarianism.
If that’s your safe word, you’re probably gonna die.
