"The security for the children meant travelling with another car, and that driving in convoy proved difficult in the busy school run traffic.

Checks on the route took place before term time, but with the school traffic it was deemed not safe enough."

This was a good move. If you are running a quick errand you can get the return for the price of a single. Also good where a journey can be completed more quickly by changing bus.

🙄 Security checked out the royal school run during the summer holidays... Gah!

🚗💨 We could have told them school run traffic can account for 25% of traffic in the morning, layered on top of rush hour traffic.

😜 Please share this to help prevent other security teams making the same mistake.

And why wouldn't you? Cycling, whether on a regular bike or on a cargo, is such a brilliant way to get to school. And to know that as they get older they can do so independently is the dream.

It is so simple, really.
It's almost as though there's a magic bullet that @solveschoolrun.bsky.social

By actually providing a safe, continuous network of paths and cycleways, you help with childhood obesity, air pollution, reduce traffic, free parents from the school run, and build happy confident kids.
“Currently about 2/3rds of all Dutch children walk or bike to school, with 75% of secondary school kids cycling to school. By enabling safe and active travel, #Dutch cities prevent an estimated one million car journeys to school each morning.” — @modacitylife.bsky.social in book #CurbingTraffic

The recently relocated Duke and Duchess of Sussex, now living in the Cotswolds, have pulled children, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, out of their new British school after just a few days, due to school run congestion.

More of this please!

🥳 When school streets are both substantial and enforced - they can look like this.

🚸 We believe all children and families should have a safe, healthy and fun school run like this.

Do you?

“We have given up so much public space to cars, and if you live in a city with kids you live in constant fear that they will be hit by a passing vehicle.

"It restricts our movement so much that we almost can’t see it anymore.”

Sadly such a common sight. And absolutely not acceptable.

This #pavementparking across from a school forced me into the carriageway this morning. The driver shouted to tell me that it was only for a few minutes while they dropped off their kid. Well, I also have a kid, and this endangers lots of people.

The Dutch don't just build cycle tracks, they build cycle networks. Over motorways, under junctions, then branching off to the gym, football pitches & other local destinations.

Safe, direct routes connecting the places people need to go. This is how you make cycling a normal part of everyday life.

Love this.
Spotted in Glasgow! This lovely new segregated cycleway and footway on Cowcaddens Road.

Have you seen any inspiring cycle infrastructure in other cities recently?

Thank you for sharing. And yes to all this and more.
We shouldn't have to ask our children to be safe so that drivers can be dangerous.

Invest in School Streets, Bike Buses, Road Safety, Car Control, Presumed Liability.
This insanely out-of-touch government advice for kids on how to cross the road safely would be laughable if it weren't for the 443 children injured on London's roads each year.

Oh to be able to let them muck about on the street outside your house with intermittent supervision...

🥲 What used to be normal is now impossible.

🛻 Cities are designed for cars, not for kids playing erratically by a road.
