The majority (63%) of citizens trust scientists. Only 5% distrust scientists.

There is less trust for politicized topics (climate science) and of government or business scientists

It's critical to support science at universities, where people trust the results

We observe the development of a division of labor from simple selfish behavior and communication between the members of the system. The role of active information is central to achieving this heterogeneous population structure.

"The culture of power and the civilization of love."
It's a great document. Not just as it regards AI, but its indictment of the broader political economy and world order. Struck by how much of it is so obviously in direct opposition to US policy.
The reason people like the Pope’s AI missive is because there is simply no other institution has taken the side of humanity in the humanities sense. I’m not Catholic, but I am a human who cares about the human mind and the poetics Catholics call a soul.

A break from social media can allow you to zoom out and reflect on what's actually important. Practical human value disappearing is a big deal, and we need to address it much more strongly.

New! DROP will partly help. Fill it out to push data brokers to drop your data.

For the first time since the birth of the Internet, the world is confronting not merely a new technology in AI, but a new operational status quo. The question is whether governance can evolve before security fears harden into permanent fragmentation, writes Konstantinos Komaitis.

Only in the 1960s were the terms "prokaryote" and "eukaryote" formalized! As originally defined, eukaryotes had complex architectures, prokaryotes did not.

Vibe coders have known it, and now maybe politicians are learning it.

You ask AI, you put its plan into action, and then you realize. Its optimistic style misled you. It didn't have the required context, it wasn't provided the precise goals, it created incorrect deductions and assumptions.
