i've been working on chatbots for 14 years; computers have been stupid the whole time.

when they work, it seems like magic. when they don't, their stupidity used to be more obvious.

the reason people are so taken by LLMs is that their failure modes still bear a resemblance to human language.
AI chatbots are less an indication of advanced technology and much more an indication of how gullible human beings are just encountering anything that mimics human conversation.
Like!!! Stop trying to convince me that there is substance to these things!!! This is not a consciousness!!! This is just a computer program designed to respond as if it understands when it very obviously just following a format! You cannot hurt the feelings of a key word reader like this!

all those people who called me "irresponsible" for advocating air strikes against specific data centers better be eating crow.
I double-checked this on a couple of Xitter stat sites and it's true. Average views of the main AfD account dropped 90% and average engagement dropped by 60%. This is commercial social media for you: bots, damn bots and Russian bots.
We’ve been talking about this for years.

None of these far-right movements are organic.

it can be said clearly enough: it resulted in multiple deaths.
100% & it really can't be said clearly enough that the deaths from AV development caused by tesla & uber were fully preventable w the right regulations & oversight bodies & the same will be true w gen AI. the issue in both cases is deployment on the general public with no accountability, not R&D.
when emerging technologies are guided by long-termist utilitarianism, the public gets the deaths and doesn't get the benefits, while the Musks and Kalanicks get vast wealth... the current LLM/AI space is different in many ways, but utilitarian arguments should still be a massive, screaming red flag

a common misogynist pattern we've seen from oldschool twitter and of course offline misogyny: they seem to strip us of our job titles, degrees, even names and genders in some cases to help buoy their claims we're not experts nor scholars... I don't care that much personally, but it's a useful tell!
Extremely sexist and unhinged superficially so-called anti AI people and spaces exist. Probably because loads of sexists exist, but we don't have to tolerate them. Being anti-fascist should be a low bar, and being against sexism isn't difficult to maintain at a community-level unless it's tolerated.
I think being anti AI is entering a more mainstream phase! While incredibly good at the same time we're finally meeting a low bar.

This means:

1) more critical thinking is needed now as non-experts are making anti AI arguments so we could promote worse arguments overall — remember:
