Every time in my life I’ve had a major setback, something good has come out of it sooner or later or both. 🧵
Revisiting my childhood and voting for #Quartz.

It’s time!
#MinCup26 FINALS!!!
We have a pair of geometric beauties as deep red #Cuprite is against versatile #Quartz.

Quartz with a graphite inclusion would be an unstoppable powerhouse (and also would keep our hearts from breaking).

Nooooo! Well, I chose, but you can’t make me tell.

Vote your own conscience!
#MinCup26 Semifinal 2
It’s a match sure to break hearts between industrial powerhouses piezoelectric #quartz and lubricating #graphite!

(With the correct links this time!)

I don’t have anything against cuprite, but somehow I’ve chosen its opponent in every round, and this one’s no different.

My vote goes to #halite.
#MinCup26 SEMI-FINALS!!!

It's showdown of the soft and cubical as coppery #Cuprite and salty #Halite compete for a spot in the finals! Both are worthy, but only one can have your vote.

I love you baby owl!
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BokehBirds - any bird captured with a soft, muted or blurry background. So here's a sleepy young great horned owl for your Monday morning.

This one was hard for me, and at the moment I voted, I tipped for lead remediation. So #pyromorphite got my vote, despite my debt of gratitude to graphite for so many things
#MinCup26 Quarterfinal 4
We're coming down the end! Are you supporting lead-locking #pyromorphite or ancient #graphite as we enter the semifinals.

I did a thing this morning for Week Without Driving. Somehow I only just found out about it last week. (It starts Thursday.) Here's the content of the email I sent to my reps (tweaked slightly per rep)

Feeling sentimental tonight, I almost voted for Julienite. Poor Henri, just 33.

All hail, #Halite
#MinCup26 Quarterfinals 3
It's a pair of dissolvable beauties as rare and complicated #Julienite is against ubiquitous and straightforward #Halite.

I’ll vote for #Quartz every opportunity I get. No exception here. With my apologies to cobalt blue, a lovely color.
#MinCup26 Quarterfinal 2
Both of today's minerals can be found in hydrothermal vein deposits as cobalt arsenide #Skutterudite is against classic silicate #Quartz for a spot in the semi-finals.

I love you little round owl. Guess what, you’re still round even when you’re stretching yourself up tall.
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Borbs, birds looking plump so here's a rather round Northern Pygmy Owl. The second photo shows just how skinny it can look when it sucks it all in. Same bird, same perch, a few seconds later. #birds #owls

Cuprite is only “rarely used as a copper ore,” so I voted #Sphalerite for the 🎺🎺🎺
#MinCup26 Quarterfinal 1
It’s a rich red start to the quarterfinals as two components of brass face off with zinc ore #Sphalerite is up against copper-rich #Cuprite.

It’s not so great for my blood pressure, but I still voted for #Halite!

There are a number of ways to remove lead from soil, and doing so reduces blood lead levels in children. I expect we need all of them! So, #pyromorphite it is despite the fascination of spiraling 🌀 cylindrite!

The linked photo of Henri Julien is so touching. And 33 years odd such a short life. I can’t help but wonder if it might have been tuberculosis.

Still, pleochroism. I voted for #Putnisite
#MinCup26 Round 2 Match 5
It's a pair or rare, vibrant minerals with unusual chemistry as purple #Putnisite is up against blue #Julienite.

#Quartz is the first mineral ever heard of, back in 1966. It got my vote in the first round, and I’m happy to repeat in round 2

Besides, who doesn’t love amethyst?
#MinCup26 Round 2 Match 4
Both colourful yet opposite in almost every other way, it’s abundant and hard #Quartz against rare and very soft #Stichtite.

I had a chance to check on this sequoia near Squirrel Creek today. Looks like it’s doing well!

I last checked on it November 21, 2021. That was right after the fire that went through. It looked like it was going to be touch and go, so I’m super happy to see it doing well.

Pleochroism with bonus points as an index mineral. #Andalusite had my vote in round 1 and retains it in round 2
#MinCup26 Round 2 Match 3:
It's a shiny showdown as soft copper-rich #Cuprite is up against the multicoloured index mineral #Andalusite.
