“For someone who’s never been an actual member, I’ve thought about extreme scenes an awful lot. With critical distance as much as admiration, I’ve tried to figure out what makes them tick.”

Designer Louise OFarrell did a tremendous job! I feel lucky to have my words wrapped in it. bsky.app/profile/unvp...

It has arrived! Just the satirical perspective I need in this moment. I’ve always enjoyed Gary Allen’s writing, including his “In Other Words” Substack. #booksky

“Ambiances turn into mental images increasingly untethered from fact. Were the walls deep purple or dusty rose? Was the hallway with the Deco sconces by the entrance or in back? Did I hallucinate a second floor?”

“My interest in branding comes from my work as an art historian who teaches the history of design. But it was research for my forthcoming book…that piqued my interest in the branding for this Olympics.” Link in bio.

I was just listening to the radio show Air Talk with Larry Mantle on @laistofficial and the discussion of abuses at Noma were framed entirely in terms of fine dining. My essay here points out this is not limited to elite restaurants or fine dining.

New one out now. Putting the revelations of abuse mounting around Noma and Chef Rene Redzepi in broader—if no less depressing—context. Link in bio. Free to subscribe. #nomagate

New one out now. “For Noma, expressing place is existential….. But does this—and should this—define Noma anymore?” Free. Link in bio.

“Should a restaurant critic, the type with a regular column and clout, ignore a horrible place or publish a negative review? I’m not talking about the standard paragraph reserved for flaws, not even the mixed assessment. I mean a thorough, abject pan.“

New one just out on my The Eye in Dining Substack. I propose that restaurant critics dropping anonymity is about more than the practical impossibility of hiding. Enjoy!

This one really feels like the end of an era. Not just his break with an orthodox architectural modernism and his ventures in computer-aided design but also the shape/s he gave to Los Angeles. RIP Frank Gehry.

Christopher Knight’s “L.A. Exploded” got it right. My forthcoming book from @universitynevadapress MEET ME AT THE WEST BEACH CAFE: Art, Restaurants, and the Rebirth of L.A., will be the response that says, “Now, let me show you how much restaurants contributed to that transformation!” #booksky
