One reason so many people mistake emotion for thought may be that the language surrounding public life has shifted away from evidence, logic, and verification—and toward feeling, belief, and emotional instinct. Research on millions of books shows that this reversal accelerated after 2007.

Why are Nazi warships resurfacing in the Danube River? | CBC
Nazi German warships scuttled in the Danube River during the Second World War are resurfacing as water levels plunge — a striking sign of the extreme heat and drought gripping Europe this summer.

Once people start laughing it’s very difficult to stop them on the grounds you alone don’t think it’s funny.
I don't think I've ever seen a group of people take a joke quite as badly to heart as this lot have this week

Buttigieg: We didn't know it, but we've all been trusting our lives to the restraint of whoever the president might be. And now we have a president who is completely unrestrained. And so the only answer to that is a functioning Congress.

It turns out we do not have a functioning Congress.

Day 1561 of my 3 day war. This war has now lasted longer than Russia's involvement in WW1. An incompetent Czar presided over endless disasters, mass casualties & economic calamity causing the army to eventually mutiny.

I remain a master strategist.

Bill Bryson on the subject of Brits bristling when others point out the oddness of old units: "'Of course they make sense,’ the British person will sniff. ‘Half a firkin is a jug, half a jug is a tot, half a tot is a titter, half a titter is a cock-droplet. What’s not logical about that?’" 😀
I know that this makes perfect sense for people who grow up with these measures. Personally I’m strongly on team meter-liter-degree-kilos.

For the past 30-40 years, society sold us the lie that you could just "individual responsibility" your way out of having to do politics.

But politics is just decisions about how we organize society, and "not doing politics" is the same thing as giving up your voice.
"Not doing politics" is why the rent is too damn high for young people.
Seniors are overwhelmingly more likely to vote local races as 18-30 year olds. Your city council and mayor determines housing and transportation choices (& how expensive they are)
Wish more young people like me voted! Some folks from high school stopped following me because I was “getting political.” They said “I don’t do politics.”🤦🏻‍♂️

I haven’t missed an election since I turned 18! Love exercising my right to vote, even if the candidate I voted for doesn’t end up winning. 🗳️

Some titles hit you with a 1-2 punch of incongruity, or a jarring contrast that's immediately intriguing: The Yawning Heights; The Elegance of the Hedgehog; Me Talk Pretty One Day; Please Don't Eat the Daisies; Babies and Other Hazards of Sex; A Confederacy of Dunces.
What are some novel titles that strike you as powerful?

I'll go first: my question is inspired by Hannah Kaner's upcoming novel, A Snake Among Swans.

A love when a title alone stirs up the imagination.

A medieval monk spent a decade infiltrating a rival monastery in order to steal relics for his own? Surely faking the relics would have been quicker & cheaper 😀 (see J. Hašek's short story The Ears of San Martin Ildefons, where saint's ears look miraculously refreshed after each local execution)
