Rejected for a Big Foundation Thing I applied for that I was hoping would be a lifeline for my career and my lab right now. Sharing not because I need pity or anything, but just to say that it's so hard right now in ways I genuinely don't think some people realize. If you're struggling, I see you.

This is such a fabulous example of how to allow your research subject, and your ethical obligations to the ppl involved, to inform your methodology. A computer scientist recognizes that natural language processing won't do justice to her respondents, so she takes ⏰ to learn qualitative methods 👏🥹✨
As a PhD student designing my first survey, I added what I thought was a throwaway question at the end. To my surprise, thousands of academics answered it! The paper is out today: doi.org/10.1093/pnas...

TLDR: Female faculty report devaluation—defined as feeling excluded, disrespected, mistreated, or held to different standards— at higher rates than men.

And among female faculty, WOC were much more likely to report devaluation than White women, holding all else equal. This is #TheDoubleTax.

If we make screens the villain, then we let the people who control children’s health care — Congress, insurers and health systems — off the hook for their failures.

I want people to believe in themselves too — like believe they can put in the hard work. Not believe they are entitled to the credit of having done something without putting in the effort of actually doing it.

I wish people would take their own mental health seriously. Your brain is a muscle worth strengthening. Your executive functioning is worth the effort it takes to go through a creative process.

Nobody can take that away from *you*. It will serve you in living a life of good quality.
