I wanted an art noveau storybook feel, from the lettering to the flowery borders around the tower. Look for the firebird feathers and the Ukrainian inspired flower crown from the fantasy kingdom of Cherta.

Galina purred as she ghosted a hand along the gash in his shirt, where a scar had newly formed above all the crumbling dried blood. His shoes dragged him a minute's walk into the clearing before he saw her. They locked eyes, and his limbs were still and his mind was clearer once more. Lying above him in a tree bough was a genuine damsel in distress. Ash let out a sigh. She was humming to herself to distract herself from the danger. Her long limbs clung to the base of the tree, as far as they could get from the withering too crown above her.

She crouched down next to him and gently swatted at the flies with one hand. "Why would you ever want to be in a place where you feel like no one cares what you have to say?" I could ask that about why you stay in the witch's tower, he thought. "Well, because it seems like that's what it's like in every place that I go. So I'm sure that being a jester in a palace, even your family's palace, would be the same. It's nothing personal," he assured her. "But..." The princess nudged out her chin. "I don't think that you should have to be making a fool out of yourself all of the time just to have crowds of people pay attention to you." He brushed the dust off the outer leaves of one lettuce head. "Yeah, well, maybe you've never met the least successful child of fishmongers," he joked. Raissa didn't laugh. "I would still notice you," she murmured, eyes shining. Ash froze, suddenly grateful that he wasn't too prone to blushing, otherwise he would turn as red as the nearby patch of beets.

Ash originally had way more lines that were corny jokes or witty comebacks. I had to delete a lot of them that just weren’t funny or felt forced. Which is odd since part of his arc is realizing he doesn’t need to act like a jester in order for the right people to remember or love him.

Raissa likes Ash back, but her whole life she’s been bossed around by her court and by a prophecy she’s banned from reading. Raised by politicians, she can’t trust easily. #SumLuv

Even the coziest of romances has some tension, some aspect between them that must be unlocked over the course of the story to bring them closer

Ash follows a magical lure to Gisela’s tower-but the soulmate bond really pulled him to Raissa. Later A & R bond over love of music and of reading. He serenades her and inspires her to explore life beyond the tower. She’s the first to see him for more than just a bard or the funny one. #SumLuv
