The Floating Bridge service had been carrying people across the River Itchen since 1836. Its days are numbered in this photo as the Itchen Bridge is built alongside it. The Floating Bridge service came to an end when the Itchen Bridge opened in 1977.

To someone who has more than a passing interest in #census #estimation #methods this is quite a ride: all modern censuses involve statistical estimation and imputation: it's just not as simple as visiting everyone and publishing the number!
