Very excited to share a new paper, Big Axions, written with my wonderful collaborators Hannah Banks and @nealweiner.bsky.social!

These models have extremely rich theory space structure, give high-quality QCD axion candidates, and open up fascinating cosmology!

Big Axions
We introduce big axions: axion models in which a Nambu-Goldstone mode emerges from the collective spontaneous breaking of a network of U(1) symmetries delocalized in theory space. Big axions naturally...

It’s remarkable how many new questions keep emerging from QFT problems that people were calling classic decades ago.

A tragic but predictable development. In addition to the sheer volume of papers, a lack of AI disclosure continues to be a huge problem.
arXiv has updated our policy on rate limiting for all submitters.

This update was made to fairly distribute moderator time & support the arXiv community of staff, volunteers, readers & authors.

Please read our announcement to learn more: https://blog.arxiv.org/2026/10/01/updated-rate-limit-policy/

An interesting result out today from LZ. Definitely not a standard wimp, but maybe an inelastic scattering or momentum dependent scattering? (1/n) www.sciencenews.org/article/dark...
Have scientists glimpsed the first dark matter particle?
Shadowy dark matter has eluded scientists for decades. The LZ experiment may have spotted one particle, called a WIMP, but more data is needed to check.

I'm sad to report that Mark Wise, theoretical physicist at Caltech, has passed away. He was my friend and collaborator, a giant of theoretical physics, and just one of my favorite people. RIP.

So long #LHC and thank you for all the collisions 👋

Today, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s most powerful particle accelerator, comes to the end of an extraordinary chapter in its scientific journey.

Preparing a new arXiv submission this week has made me notice how uneven AI disclosure still is.

I think we should normalize simply saying when AI tools helped with coding, drafting, editing, cross-checks, literature search, etc. Transparency reduces stigma and lets readers judge the work fairly.

Very thrilled to have received a New Horizons in Physics Prize: breakthroughprize.org/Laureates/1/.... I hope this helps, in whatever small way it can, bring a spotlight on to the search for dark matter and more broadly the need for experiments and the funding to innovate, build, and operate them.

I’m giving a public talk on magnetic monopoles at Book Club Bar in Manhattan’s East Village on January 20 at 8 pm. No physics background needed — it should be a lot of fun, and it’s guaranteed to attract a good crowd! 🧲
