If I wanted to protect the most prestigious and highly paid jobs for the social groups who usually hold them I'd probably design an education system that discouraged poorer children from studying the entry qualifications for these jobs as early as possible..

Let’s define bright as academically high attaining. And, in future, if voc gets you access to a local job more quickly you will find families with limited incomes pressuring their children to take the quicker money for rational reasons. That’s what both history and economics would suggest.

We've done this so many times. 14-19 Diploma, T Levels, V Levels. We never give it the time or the money to make it work. Esp with employers.

I have to say, listening to the Today programme dedicate an entire (context free) section about whether migrants are more likely to be convicted criminals *the morning after* hundreds of non-migrants of my own ethnicity committed a pogrom is blood boiling.

But also - businesses used to train young people? They didn't expect the government to train them to do the detail of the job. My grandad was an apprentice then trained his successor. My crappy supermarket jobs trained me.

I find the whole “no one could last a whole term as PM now” argument so tiresome. I do think the information environment encourages impatience in supporters, but I think not lasting a full term after winning 411 seats would ultimately be on him
