It's very easy to wear a suit and tie in any major city, even if the aesthetic has mostly disappeared from daily life, because there are people outside wearing pink tutus with Army boots. As usual, your liberation is connected to other people's liberation.

1. Having an external locus of control is not the same as believing you’re shaped by luck or fate.
2. Giving people the illusion of an internal locus of control can also have bad consequences, especially the more their socioeconomic status makes their experience conflict with that illusion.
Having an external locus of control—believing that you are shaped by luck and fate rather than influencing events—can hold individuals back. Register for free to read why children and companies might benefit from developing an internal locus

this article pulled the thoughts right out of my mind. and accurately clocked my resentment at the creeping suspiciousness of our current times too.
“Ultimately, though, it is better to risk being ‘tricked’ into having an earnest reaction than to risk never having them at all.”

My new piece for The Skeptic on the intrusive thought problem of “did AI write this?” And how to not let it destroy all sincere experiences.

can't believe it's almost here already! 2027 can't come fast enough.
September is here and what better place to spend Labor Day than in the weightless gravity of space where you couldn’t expend energy even if you wanted to as you drift endlessly into the abyss of a Continental Breakfast at the Space Hotel which is going to be here in only three short months!

Some friends are teaching their baby ASL as an early bridge to speech and they made the mistake of teaching her “want” as a concept. Now she wanders around the house signing “want” all the time as an expression of unfocused desire. They fucked up and made the baby invent the opposite of Buddhism.

Scrooges virtues — discipline, thrift, dedication, and so on — ARE virtues, they are worth practicing and cultivating. But without love, compassion, and generosity, what are you even saving *for*, Ebenezer?! This is the whole thing! The muppets were very clear about this!

Even with apocalyptic climate change unfolding at ramming speed, there will be no day on which resistance stops being worth it. There will always be something you care about to save. It will always be worth fighting to make things better or stop them from getting any worse

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” - Archbishop Desmond Tutu

One side wants fascism. The other side wants healthcare as a human right. To even attempt to conflate the two is absurd.
