The merits or demerits of the asylum seeker base aside, you might imagine from listening to the BBC that Piddington was an isolated rural village as opposed to already right next to HMP Bullingdon and a bunch of army bases.

It has just spent 10 minutes reporting on an unofficial referendum to leave the UK in some Oxfordshire village pissed off about an old army base being used to house asylum seekers.
I assume it will do the same when another village is annoyed about plans for a new housing development?

The result of the poll in Piddington, Oxfordshire, was announced on Wednesday morning after 312 people voted on Tuesday. A total of 285 people were in favour of independence from the UK while 26 voted against. One ballot was spoiled. Continue reading...

All this said, I agree with @sundersays.bsky.social that this kind of mass approach to housing asylum seekers is going to be expensive and unpopular. So I suspect the citizens of Piddintonia will get their wish granted.

The effect was temporary after the Scottish referendum, but post-Brexit the identity gap between Remain and Leave voters has grown considerably over time.

I somehow missed until now that the vote was deliberately timed to coincide with 'Battle of Britain Day' which is 'celebrated' on 15 September. I also note that the government's response this morning has not been 'we're focusing on trying to make the cost of living better for ordinary families'
BBC News at 10 giving more (favourable) coverage to the Piddington independence vote than they have for any of the devolved nations recently. The report couched in folk-myth terms (English village, Domesday Book), with Rupert Lowe dancing around. Basically a Restore party political broadcast.

I am so tired of nasty, insular, smug gits playing PR stunts to prevent people finding safety.
