Banning "superintelligent" 🤢 AI plays right into industry rhetoric and keeps the focus off immediate, real world harms such as privacy, bias, and labor. Literally the same name of the silly Bostrom book everyone was reading 12 years ago.

Again, AI companies can slow down without waiting for regulation. Releasing models without adequate safeguards is a choice, not an inevitability.

“Someone should make us stop” is a strange position for the people with their foot on the gas.
They could just… not do it. Or turn it off. Deploying AI tools in uncontrolled ways is a choice. The risks tech companies keep struggling to “manage” are risks they choose to create.

US policymakers must avoid the temptation to rebuild US science by mimicking China and going all in on STEM. That would be a mistake. We also need social science and humanities that makes sense of great technological change like AI. Thats part of US scientific tradition worth keeping.

On Democracy Now!, I floated a new theory: AI companies really have unleashed a killer monster that has slipped their control. But plot twist - the monster is human. And it's the President of the United States.

I have a hard time imagining any significant US AI regulation while Trump is president, but in the meantime people can discuss the possibilities and have things ready for 2029.

this piece highlights three key points:
(1) trump admin actively opposes AI safety reg;
(2) zuck & others essentially say trust-but-don't-verify;
(3) the industry is in disarray in the face of public hatred of them/their opacity/their clear self-interest/their public disavowal of responsibility.

We've already seen that the recent calls by AI industry leaders to ‘pace the frontier’ are insufficient, and their suggestions that we must weaken antitrust protections in order to confront the AI threat are transparently self-serving.

Frontier AI models are currently a dangerous technology without the safeguards needed to protect people from serious harm.

That's why we should immediately pause the development of advanced AI while lawmakers and regulators put systems in place to keep people safe.

“AI will kill us all” is how the tech industry, especially rich people in it, avoid talking about real world problems—ones they’re causing, exacerbating, or neglecting—while still thinking themselves good.

“I’m better than all that,” they say. “I got high with my friends and BSed about the future.”

Ask yourself this: how have institutions that for years have said they face budget shortfalls, deficits, shortages that “required” them to deny faculty lines, fire staff, raise tuition, cut research support, etc. suddenly find the money to pay for outrageously expensive contracts for AI services?
