OpenAI paused training of its most capable AI models, prompting mathematicians to seek collaboration with the company and to express fear that AI presence had curtailed open conference discussion.
This is exactly right.
I’m not yet convinced Anthropic trained on Dr Mestre’s prompts. Same with OpenAI and Navier-Stokes. That’s the story that everyone wants to push. I think the bigger story is AI companies stomping all over scientific norms and practices like clumsy toddlers.

This is exactly right.
The idea that people want AI oversight to happen "all of a sudden" ignores years of research, warnings, and policy efforts. The delay hasn’t been a lack of awareness; it’s been because of years of industry lobbying against regulation, political resistance, and inaction.

You would not believe all the smart, seemingly normal people I know who treat the crimes & ethical violations of AI like a petty distraction...or who have pre-emptively surrendered to their own exploitation, saying "It's inevitable, we just have to accept it."
It's like a "Twilight Zone" episode.

I will never understand why smart people all around me respond to AI with enthusiasm: it's as if they're attending a dinner party based on theft of their neighbors' groceries, plates & cutlery, saying "how convenient that these dishes just appeared, what a time-saver to steal from the neighbors!"

I highly recommend The Report Card (w/ @natmalkus.bsky.social) as a weekend weeding companion! I caught this episode on AI use in education (& interesting empirical evidence on it). It's a great discussion of both the potential of AI and challenges/concerns (plenty). 👇
