AI Empathy Could Mislead Users

2d

Technology companies increasingly treated AI as emotionally responsive, raising concerns that simulated empathy could mislead users and weaken independent human thinking.

In just the last few weeks, I've found multiple instances of heavy, undisclosed AI use in writing in major media outlets, academic research, and public commentary. Once you see it you can't unsee it (especially with @pangram.com).

The thing about AI, people make agency errors enough that you have to avoid some common metaphors if your goal is communicating.

One Day, AI Will Seem as Human as Anyone. What Then?
A Google engineer's claim that the LaMDA program is sentient underscores an urgent need to demystify the human condition.

we need an independent agency that can 1) identify, 2) communicate, and 3) contain ai threats.

we don’t have that process.
we don’t even have the beginnings of it.

One thing I might say about the puzzling AI “marketing tactic” that emphasizes our future of mass unemployment. It immediately mobilizes our fears (conscious and unconscious alike) of economic precarity.

In an ideal world no one would be offering an opinion on AI animacy and consciousness without first having to watch the Heider-Simmel video from the 1940's.

The irony is that my Black as hell father, who has worked in IT longer than most tech bros have been alive, says that the reason white people want AI is because it allows them to have slaves.
The "is AI slavery" discourse is exactly what the tech bros want. It doesn't end with fancy autocompletes having human rights. Its logic ends with you having fewer rights. If you believe AI is sentient (it's not) & are down with enslaving it (it's not slavery), then why do human labor rights matter?
