Surveillance Capitalism is problematic because it reduces peoples privacy and freedom by allowing corporations to collect and analyze large amounts of personal data. It is very intrusive to have your online activities constantly monitored. #1D02

The internet has had a mostly neutral effect on our democracy because even though it allows people to share and compare different points of view, spread information, debate issues, and communicate across the country, it also has downsides, such as misinformation and algorithmic echo chambers.

Surveillance capitalism exploits humans for profit. It is also a complete violation of privacy since people are often not aware of the information they're providing or where it's going. It's become too easy for companies to steal our data, mandatory cookies are just one of their strategies. #1D02

Payola persists through social media, specifically through influencers. This is a common practice in pop music, where labels pay TikTok, Instagram and YouTube creators to feature songs as background audio or in challenges that manipulates viewers to perceive the song as a “hit”

Surveillance capitalism turns human experience into free raw data for behavioral prediction, fundamentally violating individual privacy. Trading fundamental autonomy for personalized recommendations isn't a fair exchange—it treats users as product targets rather than agents. #1D02

I think the internet has made us more aware of what is happening on both a global and national scale. Through platforms like social media, we are able to freely, for the most part, voice our opinions and views on these issues and influence one another. #1D02

The idea of an "payola" in music is worse than ever.. Rather than being a product of their local scene, a lot of people's taste in music is built off a marketable aesthetic fed to them on pinterest or spotify. To get you to listen to their plant all the industry has to do is pay for exposure. #1D02

Surveillance capitalism is an infringement on privacy rights. With the amount of data collected, companies have essentially treated all people like criminals. Such profiling of users could very easily lead to surveillance states should corporations be incentivized, such as WeChat in China. #1D02

I also agree that payola has greatly hurt the music industry. The catering to aesthetics has made money and connections more important than talent. I feel that this shows itself in how samey most modern pop music sounds compared to decades past where you could actually tell who the artist is. #1D02

While I agree that the internet has had polarizing effects on political discourse, I feel that it just revealed the preexisting division. Some folks are just dead set in their views that they will refuse contrary evidence. All the internet did was just provide a forum to spread such rhetoric. #1D02

I firmly believe that local music scenes can still thrive. While CD and Vinyl may be a thing of the past, live music is alive and well. I've experienced firsthand how difficult it is to break into the mainstream. It all but requires thriving in a scene local to you first before major success. #1D02

Although payola isn’t as rampant, it still persists in new ways. It started with labels giving DJs money in exchange for playtime without the audience knowing. Recently, on streaming services payola occurs through paid playlists which fall outside FCC oversight, therefore facing few penalties. #1D02

#1D02 But one of the negative situations that does happen is that any mistakes made by politicians can be shown on social media and blow to proportions and also due to the fact that people are blind to bias will believe everything on their internet.
