To get a #designsky discourse going: after making AI mandatory for work last month, Shopify is At It Again.
The CDO says since "AI enables anyone to make things usable" (lol), Shopify will just have the titles Designer and Writer instead of user experience, content design, etc.

The design talent pipeline is dead. Companies are outsourcing the growth and education of early career designers to unpaid volunteers outside of work via mentorship platforms like ADPList.

UX mentorship platforms like ADPList only encourage an arms race without solving the root problem. Imagine there are 100 unhoused families and only 3 houses available. Instead of helping a family beat out the others, we should be increasing the supply of housing.

I left the ADPList platform last year, and I thought I was done with them. Turns out they took one of the talks I gave in their online conference, and are now selling it as part of an "AI-First Designer" course (my talk had nothing to do with AI).

I'm surprised by how many design leaders align themselves with Felix Lee and ADPList. They're an ethical liability given his rampant plagiarism, exploitative salaries, and their overreliance on volunteerism as a product of a VC-backed company.

For those who aren't aware, ADPList is VC-funded. So we're in effect volunteering our time to enrich Sequoia Capital. They're the only winners. Here's a crazy idea: maybe companies should be paying design leaders to train jr designers by actually hiring jr designers as part of a healthy design org?

I've just turned off my ADPList.org account. It's too bad, I *really* enjoyed mentoring on that platform when it just started around Covid. It was the right tool for the right crowd at the right time.

As much as I love ADPList and the concept behind it, I’m so happy that I’m no longer a mentor on that platform. Mentoring needs meaningful connections IMO and the gamification of the platforms doesn’t help with that. It’s more draining than anything for mentors in my experience.
