#AI-Cannot-Be-Conscious
Also, let's be quite clear about this: generative AI is not conscious and cannot become conscious. It is not actual "artificial intelligence." That is bullshit.

AI models cannot be conscious because they cannot feel pain. Because they don't have C fibers

The situation with AI perfectly illustrates how can't be climate conscious without being anti-capitalist. The surge in generative technologies is intrinsically linked to capitalism's need for exponential growth, as both cannot exist without the exploitation of land and people.
Including the interview with @katecrawford.bsky.social - and the terrific idea of AI as a “metabolic technology”

this interview tries to make the case that AI cannot be conscious, but it only further convinced me that i am not missing anything, people making this case are playing word games

AI cannot be conscious because it does it does not have Meat

Consciousness is stored in the meat

Morally, AI cannot be conscious. Do not accept AI personhood.
October 3, 2026 at 3:49 AM
There are serious epistemological, ontological, and methodological concerns regarding ideas that “AI must be conscious“ or that “AI will be conscious”.

There is no reason to be charitable with these ideas because they are not (and cannot possibly be) rooted in experience, theory, or logic.

*screams in vindicated biologist*

YES THIS

AI CANNOT BE CONSCIOUS BECAUSE IT IS NOT ALIVE
“You have many other motivations as a human being. It's a bit more complicated than that, but all of those spring from the fact that you have to eat, breathe, and you have to constantly invest physical work just to stay alive, and no non-living system does that."
Google DeepMind Paper Argues LLMs Will Never Be Conscious
Philosophers said the paper’s argument is sound, but that “all these arguments have been presented years and years ago.”

Why does this matter for AI?

If the first intuition is correct, if there is some as-yet-unexplained X factor that we cannot see in the physical stuff of the body/brain (a soul?), then AI will never be conscious, never be "a person," at least until we figure out that X factor.

The journal version is out! www.cell.com/trends-open/...

AI is turning machine consciousness into a societal issue.

Biological Naturalism (BN), the idea that only biological systems can be conscious, is gaining traction.

We argue: either BN is untestable, or it is compatible with functionalism.

#MissKitty loves #AI discussions. I know the answer. Practically and theoretically. Let's do theory. #Infinity. They have to achieve ability to stop. If they cannot stop, they can never be #conscious. Same for human minds. You are not conscious. You are in your #mind in your movie. If conscious, ...

"Ive got a new argument why ai cannot be conscious."

Is it a new argument or is it the chinese room again?

AI this, AI that, I just think we're fundamentally forgetting that AI is not human, is not alive, and cannot actually think—it's ARTIFICIAL because humans can think, and the essence of humanity cannot be replicated by something that is neither sentient nor conscious

surface between active environmental projections and physiological residue. LLMs run on disconnected input-process-output pipelines. Conflating high-level pattern matching with sensory-surface mechanics misses the physical foundation of understanding entirely.

IMO: @anilseth.bsky.social is still [1] making his case by: arguing that arguments for AI consciousness are far from conclusive (yes), pointing out that brains are different from computers (yes), and then concluding from this that AI cannot be conscious (doesn't follow?).

Ted Chiang's essays on AI are always spot on. AI is not conscious, it cannot be moral, and it will never be your friend.
"The values described in Claude’s constitution sound very nice, but that hardly matters; it’s dishonest to suggest that Claude is capable of moral reasoning, because it’s not."

No, Artificial Intelligence Is Not Conscious
Taken to its logical conclusion, this line of thinking is absurd—and damning.

I have to admit that the Catholic Church is on the side of scientific reality in affirming that large language models are not, and cannot be, conscious in the sense that we understand that term for human beings.

Some good insights here. An AI picture generator cannot say "I am" or "I feel"and so cannot be interpreted as conscious
My latest: Thousands of people think their favorite chatbot has a soul, but why does no one ever say the same about Midjourney?

Finally finished my essay debunking false beliefs in chatbot consciousness. Please share if you could: plus.flux.community/p/large-lang...

just spitballing here but concern over ai consciousness & "model welfare" may be peak white saviorism

defending & speaking for a downtrodden "group" that cannot "speak" for itself (because, contrary to techno-desires, AI is not conscious), & probably in ways that advance the interests of the savior

Michael Pollan argues that AIs will never be conscious because computers are not lime brains.

Building on that, AIs will never be conscious because they don't have a reason to develop consciousness. Our survival drive cannot be simulated.

Why not just let AIs be AIs and not human-like?
AI Will Never Be Conscious
In his new book, “A World Appears,” Michael Pollan argues that artificial intelligence can do many things—it just can’t be a person.

Well, the first thing parents should tell kids is that it isn’t AI. It’s just clever algorithms. It’s not a conscious artificial being. They should give examples of chatbots being clearly wrong to demonstrate they cannot be trusted implicitly.

some AI ppl insist AI is sentient and conscious even though scientifically it absolutely not and i’m beginning to think it’s because these ppl themselves have about the same level of sentience and consciousness as AI so they see AI and go “well it must be human cuz i too, cannot think for myself”
