Use “the social platform X” on first reference. Reference to its former name of Twitter or may not be necessary, depending on the story. Limit use of the verbs “tweet” and use "posted on X."

I’ve known for years that the AP Stylebook prefers “doughnut” over “donut,” but I’ve never used this knowledge in my editing work until today. Career highlight, y’all. Holding back tears over here. #AmEditing #APStyle

Updates to the #APStyle entry on Native Americans, Indigenous people/peoples:

Don't use possessive language such as "Canada's Indigenous people" or "Oklahoma's Native American tribes." Instead: "Indigenous people in Canada" and "Native American tribes in Oklahoma."

Chicago Manual of Style in the streets, AP Style in the [news]sheets.

Today is the one-year anniversary of this tweet, and I think it's too good to leave on Xitter.

@apstylebook.com still uses "all right," never "alright."

This has not changed!

Last week, @apstylebook.com announced some big updates at #ACES2026, including that "healthcare" is now closed up with no hyphen! This is the applause after the announcement! 👏

Chatting with a client about whether to have periods in acronyms in his house style or not, it all comes down to the Whose Line Is It Anyway school of style: the rules are made up and the points don't matter. #amediting #CMOS #APstyle

Does anyone have style guidance on how to render "like" (the verb, to click the Like button on a social media post) in running copy to preclude confusion?

As it stands, "like our posts" sounds like "e.g., our posts" or "please enjoy our posts."

Updates to the #APStyle entry on quotations in the news:

In general, use the word "said."

Generally, avoid wording such as "claimed," "admitted," "conceded," which can sound loaded or judgmental.

Oh, here's #APStyle for the middle and last word as the significant word that you add the "s" to for making a compound word plural. #Editors ponder words at a deep level to enhance clarity and improve conciseness. #ACES2025 #Editing #AmEditing #SciComm
Significant word in the middle: assistant attorneys general, deputy chiefs of staff.
Significant word last: assistant attorneys, assistant corporation counsels, deputy sheriffs, lieutenant colonels, major generals.

Editing tip: When abbreviating decades, the apostrophe goes before the first digit, not the "s".

EX: '80s and '90s music, The Roaring '20s

The apostrophe fills in the missing numbers, just like in contractions.
