I'm delighted that my article "Kawamata bounds for Fano threefolds and the Graded Ring Database", joint with Gavin Brown and Miles Reid, has appeared in the Nagoya Mathematical Journal. #MathSky #AlgebraicGeometry

You're learning algebraic geometry. You absolutely need this thing. What books are on it?

#MathSky #AlgebraicGeometry
I saw in a toot described as a medieval browser with several open tabs 😅
It's not medieval, but it's called the "book’s wheel", used to open 7 books at the same time and located in the first public library in the Americas in Mexico.
It seems something that @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com would love it!

Guess who struggled with a commutative diagram in tikz because of using d instead of r for a right arrow.

For those unaware, right and left in Italian are destra and sinistra.

#MathSky #AlgebraicGeometry is there a tag for growing old?

I give this course's last lecture tomorrow but for technical reasons we had the end of course party today.

Two students baked #AlgebraicGeometry cookies and I feel so loved.

I really have to finish the current project. I was woken up at night again by the details of a proof, and it will keep happening until I write them down.

NB It’s a proof by analysis of possible cases/strata, not many but enough I’m afraid of missing one.

I am Annoyed about A Thing so a 🧵 on my favourite point set topology definition. #AlgebraicGeometry #MathSky

A topological space is irreducible if it is non empty and every non empty open subset is dense.

Exercises
1. a Hausdorff topological space is irreducible iff it has exactly one point

Let V be a vector space, dim V = d.
The map V⊗V→S²V induces
f:V→S²V⊗V*.

If d=2, coker f = (canonically isomorphic to) S³V⊗Λ²V*.
If d=3, coker f =Λ²S²V⊗Λ³V*.

This is a key step in a paper I am currently writing.

Decades of chanting “to define stability for projective varieties you need to choose an equivariant ample line bundle” without understanding that Mumford is just repurposing Hilbert’s stability criterion for group actions on vector spaces.

Note that a small image cannot capture the whole solution set, which looks like a sphere with the poles removed.

If you’re curious, z^3+w^3=1 looks like a torus (genus 1) with three points removed. And z^n+w^n=1 is a genus (n-2)(n-1)/2 surface with n points removed.

#Mathsky #AlgebraicGeometry
In complex rectangular coordinates (z,w), the equation z^2+w^2=1 extends our old friend, the unit circle. Here we solve for w and branch-cut the square root over two rays to infinity.

#MathsToday #AlgebraicGeometry Started by reviewing sheaves of modules, ended by proving key property of quasi coherent sheaves. Tomorrow applications (including definition of closed subscheme if time permits), Thursday simple counter examples.

And the weekend will have an extra day!

This is going to be a thread on my course in #AlgebraicGeometry. Today was the first lecture, I started by drawing a few classical affine schemes over the complex numbers
x²-y²=0
zx=zy=0
y²=xy=0
then I stated Chow's theorem without proof.
