Definitely an autumnal feel on the hills behind Alltbeithe, the Glen Affric Hostel, today. High winds, low clouds, cool air. Lovely day on Mullach nan Dheiragain, Sgùrr nan Ceathreamhnan, and An Socach - one of three Munros with that name.

Alltbeithe Hostel - the most remote hostel in the UK. Loved my stay here - Glen Affric is something else.

A journal log with a small ink and wash drawing of a loch (lake) with hills in the background, with the caption ‘Looking over Loch na Camaig’. 9th May 2025- TGOC25 Day 2: Alltbeithe > Cougie Distance: 21Km, Walkers: Solo, Weather: Clear, Sunny, hot. I woke up to a clear morning. I had breakfast, broke camp and started walking again by 8.30am. I walked past the hostel and other Challengers having breakfast. I crossed the bridge to Athnamulloch where I stopped for a pee and a drink. Other Challengers passed me in turn. I continued My walk next to forestry plantations, much of them in the process of being cut down. It was still hot and so I still made slow progress. My water filter wasn't working properly and I suffered for lack of water throughout the day. The route took me along the Allt Garbh and across the cut down tree lane under Creag nan Calman. The landscape looked nothing like the forestry plantation green of the OS Map I was following. I got to Cougie by 5.30pm but was too tired to continue uphill to the Bealach Feth na Gamhna as I had planned So I stopped at the lodge where they found me a pitch. I washed and had a lovely hot meal with fellow Challengers before returning to my tent in the hope that tomorrow would be cooler. Sidenote: I’m sure the youth hostel at Alltbeithe has always been special but the new warden Chrissie is warm, welcoming & funny - so make time to visit this year if you can
