Opaque Ice Cubes
A photo of a pile of ice cubes on to of a stone wall next to a reservoir. The golden sun is setting behind and the opaque ice has a shimmering glow. This was part of the AlphabetTechPhoto challenge where the challenge was water and combining it with the golden hour I've used it before but it's been one of those days 🙄😂

Yes it was week W for water and the bonus AlphabetTechPhoto challenge of the golden hour.
I took some cubes to the reservoir and poured water over so they'd glisten 😊

My #HighContrast shot for this week's #AlphabetTechPhoto. A still life composition of some favourite #vintage finds arranged on a stainless steel end table (film set auction acquisition).

#AlphabetChallenge #WeekRForReflections #StunDay #Scape #StillLife #Macro #Photography #ArtYear #ECK #AltText
A macro image of vintage jewelry and an antique goblet on a highly reflective stainless steel table. A large, articulated brooch in the shape of a tiger is curled around the base of a black pressed glass goblet. The tiger is covered in rhinestones with black enamel stripes. Two necklace strands dangle from the goblet. One is faceted black glass beads and the other is dusky purple pearls. Focus is on the tiger face and its reflection. There are bokeh from the rest of the body and tail of the brooch. The image is highly contrasted between the bright sparkle of the tiger, the black goblet, and the dark stainless steel table. Tech details and equipment: I made an attempt at indirectly lighting this using a cool white light bounced off a large reflector. However, part way through I turned on the main light in the room to switch lenses and forgot about turning it off again.... so this shot has both lol Nikon D610 105mm f/2.8 handheld Exposure: 1/20s Aperture: f/6.3 ISO: 1250 Focal length: 105mm Exp. 5001 Yonge St is an office building built in 1991.

The distorted #reflection is Royal Pinnacle (2000). The building on the right is Pearl Place (2024). See #AltText for the difference 24 yrs makes.

A monochromatic image featuring the mirrored facade of 5001 Yonge St. in Toronto (former city of North York). There are distorted reflections of the Royal Pinnacle condo building (completed 2020) which sits a block north. On the right side of the frame, is the much newer Pearl Place (completed 2024) which sits to its south. Despite being of similar size overall, the two condo buildings have very difference unit density and square footage. The shot forms a microcosm of what condo development shifted between over the past few decades. Royal Pinnacle has 320 units on 32 floors. They range between 575 sq ft and 2104 sq ft. Pearl Place has 478 units on 34 floors. They range between 482 sq ft and 1049 sq ft. We allowed developers to construct building after building overloaded with tiny units suited to a couple at most, but more often bought by foreign investors as a way to safely store their wealth (sometimes rented out, but often allowed to sit vacant). And then we wonder why families are moving further and further from urban centers... Thanks for counterbalancing the snowflakes in the upcoming forecast.

An image of a cluster of bright white snow drops after rainfall. The focus is on the largest grouping on the right two thirds of the image, but other drooping blooms dangle in both the foreground and background. Other leaf debris and sticks from the previous year lie beneath the new growth. It was shot with a macro lens, however I probably wasn't really close enough to make this truly a macro photo. Tech: NIKON D610 Nikon 105mm f/2.8 Exposure: 1/400s ISO: 320 Aperture: f/5 Editing done using Affinity. In addition to usual edits, a mask was added diagonally from the top left corner and the bottom right corner where the image is out of focus. The masks were used to lower the exposure slightly further than the main subject.

CN Tower via the Sky Walk's roof. Alternating layers of dark and light window tint make for a graphic #pattern, but the #symmetry between the sun and the hanging lamp was what really caught my eye.

#AlphabetTechPhoto #AlphabetChallenge #WeekLForLayers #UrbanGaze #ECK #Photography #Toronto #AltText
A photograph of the CN Tower shot from inside the nearby Sky Walk. The day is somewhat overcast, but with a bright sunshine and blue skies coming through gaps in fluffy white clouds. The tower is lined up through the center of the image. The arched roof of the walkway is aligned so that the pattern of the glass panes radiate from the bottom right corner. The glass is tinted in a pattern of alternating clear and darkly tinted pairs of rectangular panes. Each set is followed by an entirely clear row. The arched trusses with their diagonal struts align with the clear sections making it look like they could be triangular panes. There are various streaks and deposits of looks to be rust running down from the metal framework following a long, snowy winter. The sun and an industrial hanging light are mirroring each other on either side of the tower following the diagonal lines of symmetry. The sun is partially obscured by clouds, but more importantly it is directly behind one of the panels with dark tint which is acting as a filter. Where the other tinted sections look nearly black, the panels backed by the sun have a marble like quality with a mix of navy, gold, and white tones. Fresh snow on fresh buds.

My attempt at thirds is a bit messed up with that unfortunately right in the middle twig, but it's otherwise close

A macro photograph of golden brown twigs with spring buds. The clearest focus is on a horizontal twig lying along the line between the top and middle third of the image. A second arches from the bottom corner to about a third into the top of the frame. Both have fluffy deposits of fresh snow balanced on them. In the lower third of the image a slightly out of focus twig is arched supporting a shelf of fluffy snow. More twigs and snow are out of focus in the background. The biggest challenge I had shooting this event was the lighting. (Motion was a close second.)

Five different light types around the bar & that's just the ones in frame!

A photograph of a dramatically lit bar counter in LuLa Lounge. A large orange lantern chandelier hangs in the top left corner. The walls behind appear reddish with a dark grey or blue paint above. A bump out section in the middle is decorated with a geometric star pattern in the same colours. Two metal chandeliers hang in this upper section as well. The top of the bar is edged with a scrollwork cutout design with tiny yellow fairy lights running along its bottom. Below that, a green stained glass window banned with black trim finishes off the valance over the bar. A more decorative glass panel with a red, blue, yellow and white design of stars over a mountain is in the middle. Lighting hidden behind the stained glass illuminates the working area of the bar. Shelves are full of liquor bottles and glassware hangs from racks above. A couple bartenders are moving around near taps on the counter. The counter itself has warm lighting beneath which is highlighting the orange front. Various patrons and staff sitting and standing in the area in front of the bar are shadowed almost to the point of silhouettes. There is motion blurring as well. I'm a day late, but didn't have time to edit yesterday. This is for last week's #AlphabetChallenge #WeekEForEponymous #AlphabetTechPhoto.

Used the new macro lens for a #portrait shoot of this black Wedgwood jasperware vase. #AltText

#BlueSkyMonday #ArtYear #Photography
A portrait shot of a trumpet shaped solid black Wedgwood vase with neo classical floral decorations. The vase has been photographed against a blue background which, depending on your particular device, may or may not resemble the darker of Wedgwood's two blue shades. Out of focus behind the vase is a blue leather silverware case with a cream silk rose and several white beaded necklaces draped over it. Wedgwood (established 1759) was named for its founder Josiah Wedgwood. The company became especially known for its jasperware (a matte finish stoneware developed by Josiah in the 1770s). The most readily identifiable pieces are done in the iconic combination of pale blue with white relief decorations. Jasperware is initially white, but was then stained different colours through additional processes. The very earliest versions were stained through with colour, but this shifted to a dipping process which is the case with the vase pictured. There are a few very small nibbles where the underlying white stoneware is visible.

I've started researching a proper macro lens for my Nikon, but used this week's challenge to reconfirm for myself exactly why the two I have do not work. Had to fall back on the phone for now.

#AlphabetChallenge #WeekCForCloseUp #AlphabetTechPhoto #Macro #SensoryArt #Broken #Photography #AltText
A macro photograph of the neck of a vintage Maling Lustreware vase. The pink ceramic piece is missing a large, triangular chunk and the photograph has been focused through that breakage onto the interior glazing. The glazing is heavily crazed resulting in dark burgundy lines on the exterior and tan lines on the interior. The gold trim from around the rim of the vase is almost entirely worn off. Despite the age and wear, the glaze remains extremely reflective and the characteristic opaline flashes of Lustreware are very apparent in the interior's finish. The vase was draped by a piece of grey velvet both to create a background and in an attempt to block more light. The only lighting was ambient sunlight which was still causing intrusive reflections. I did want to attempt a setup in a photo booth thing I got some time ago, but didn't have time for that experiment unfortunately. This image was made using a Google Pixel 10 Pro and edited with Google Photo tools. I attempted a few shots with my Nikon DSLR, but the two lenses I have for it were absolutely not the right tools for the task. I did pretty much know that, but it was a helpful exercise for understanding *why* those particular lens specs don't work for this kind of shot. I think it's given me a better understanding of what I need in a macro lens, though!

Antique books are something I find stunning and have collected quite a few! I require supervision in bookshops...

#AlphabetChallenge #WeekBForBooks #StunDay #Januarty #Purchase #ArtYear #Photography
A double exposed photograph which combines a shot of 3 antique books on Heraldry with a photo of a coat of arms from an interior plate. From left to right the books are A Manual of Heraldry Historical & Popular in a red cover, The Clans, Septs and Regiments of the Scottish Highlands in a blue cover, and Heraldry As Art in a black cover. All three are heavily decorated with gold gilt. The coat of arms has two stags with red antlers standing on their hind legs with a quartered shield between them. The shield has two fields of blue with three white flowers, a red antlered stag head on a white field, and three red crowns on a white field. The shield is topped with another red-antlered stag's head. Above is a banner with a motto in all capital letters: Oublier ne puis which translates to "I cannot forget". The arms were one half of a bookplate containing the Extract of Matriculation for a Charles Ian Fraser of Reelig. The books and bookplate were photographed with a Google Pixel 10 Pro. Initial editing was done in Google Photos. The two shots were combined using the Canva app. The coat of arms was layered on top of the books with transparency set to 40/100 to mimic a double exposure digitally.
