orange Ultisols and Inceptisols are kind of middle-of-the-road for crops. Andisols are formed by volcanic activity. light pink Spodosols are cold forests, and light blue Gelisols are your permafrost stuff. dark blue Vertisols are shrink-swell clays that are not great for building structures.

Knowing a soil's texture (wt% sand, silt, and clay) is SUPER important for understanding #carbon, water, and nutrient cycles. Check out how the routine step of air-drying biases texture measurements, esp. in #soils with poorly crystalline minerals (data from National Cooperative Soil Survey #usda)

The main characteristic that distinguishes them is the formation of imogolite in addition to the allophane and gibbsite more common in Andisols.

Oh…that’s tough…I have found it really love the hobby.

It has been a great way to deep dive on soils too. I have learned so much about andisols in the process. Most of my #bonsai are potted up volunteer j. maples, fir, birch and oaks… or giveaways at our club.

We hunt scoria, pumice and clays.
