Now let’s explore that "DDP-IP Gateway" button. DDP-IP is better known as "MacIP", and encapsulates IP (Internet Protocol) packets in AppleTalk, allowing machines on LocalTalk to use TCP/IP and access the Internet

I'm not sure what "IP Address of File Server" […]

And sure enough, it works!

The utility gives you the RefRouter's view of the network (adjacent networks from other routers also show here)

I disconnected this segment from GlobalTalk to avoid confusion, and we can see our zones in the utility list

In the […]

The main window lets you see some basic info and has buttons to open the different configuration dialogs.

We've created one zone on EtherTalk, and one on LocalTalk. "Seed" means this router is responsible for the network.

On EtherTalk we're seeding a […]

Before turning it on, let's open it up to see if we can learn anything more. We have a 1993 copyright on the PCB, 1994 copyright on the 1.0.0 ROM. It's powered by a Motorola 68k core, and uses the same Zilog SCC serial chip for LocalTalk as the Mac did.

Does […]

BTW, I was a developer on practically all of the pre-Mac machines (IIe on my own and IIgs professionally) through the 128K Mac and pre-release Mac II to the last of that series, plus DECnet on Mac and Appletalk on UNIX. I'm no stranger to them. Neither love nor hate, just realism.

I'm outta time! I'm packing for VCF Midwest today, but did finish up the last three projects for my NTP Time demo on old Macs: Xserve G5, Mac SE/30, and iBook G3 Clamshell (over AirPort Wi-Fi!). #vcfmw

Async Appletalk

Async AppleTalk and IPRemote AppleTalk allow suitably connected Macintoshes to access AppleTalk services via "A Remote Network Server"

You know when ip (V4) came about, people using NetBIOS, appletalk, NetWare etc. complained about V4 requiring them to type in lots of numbers instead of just referring to BobsComputer by name. The correct response was "DNS" then, as is now with V6.
