In fact, the model best supported by Tany's body-shape is the giraffe model: tidal breathing with narrow trachea & giant lungs that only contract a few times a minute.

The most unique adaptation is the lung shape: 'multicameral', with many lobes each working in parallel to move air.

A very important open access study (doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.…) led by @semifossorial.bsky.social on the ancestry of turtles was published!

Eunotosaurus' similarities are just a case of evolutionary convergence, & pantestudines might have a close relationship to sauropterygians within archosauromorpha

For #FossilFriday, here's the skull of Hyperodapedon sanjuanensis, a #rhynchosaur from South America that lived ~232 million years ago in the #Triassic. I got to study this specimen back in 2019 when I visited the @amnh.org in New York 🇺🇸

New analysis reconstructs the dawn of dinosaurs and other reptiles

Dawn of the dinosaurs demonstrates early diversification bursts and a potential role for neutral dynamics during major evolutionary radiations 🧪

Let's meet my friend Tanystropheus, a archosauromorph reptile from the Triassic.

You may notice that Tany is looooooooong, with some specimens being 6 m (20 ft) long, while only weighing 30-70 kg (65-150 lbs).

Which led me to an interesting question:
How do LONG-NECKERS like Tany BREATHE?

a new archosauromorph from late permian germany has been described! not only that, manistropheus kulicki is recovered as the basal-most member of archosauromorpha, and it is likely between 257.7–255.9 million years old

Bei mir ist v.a. "Reptilia" raus. Ich bevorzuge Sauropsida.
Synapsida als Schwestergruppe, Parareptilia basal, Eureptilia umfasst Captorhinidae und Romeriida. Paleothyris Schwestergruppe zu Diapsida. Saudis (Krongruppe) sind Lepidosauromorpha und Archosauromorpha (inkl. Testudines s.l.).

However, TBF, there is much more to this than to the relationships among the extant clades. The new evidence (esp. the CT stuff) helps clarify where among Archosauromorpha turtles fall, and that Eunotosaurus is a millerettid and not a stem-turtle.

True, fair, but honestly it's such a hairline case of node choice ... I would rather introduce archosauromorpha and ornithodira/avemetatarsalia to a layperson than explain why calling dinosaurs 'lizards' is significantly wrongerer.
