#Atlanticist
To me, as an Atlanticist and foreign policy guy for most of my career, that comment really stung.
Think about it - 200,000 voters in four states. And the 40% who couldn’t be bothered. As France’s Europe Minister said “We cannot leave the security of Europe in the hands of voters in Wisconsin every 4 years”. They get it. We don’t.

Dear US,
You just lost the most atlanticist part of Germany.
Congratulations.
Merz with remarkable clarity: „Absolutely no illusions“ about Trump. Goal needs to be step by step
independence from a US who „pretty much no longer cares about fate of 🇪🇺“.
„Unclear whether we will still speak of NATO in present shape“ by time of June summit or we need to come up with 🇪🇺alternative.

its a bad time to be an Liberal Internationalist Atlanticist

it is surreal to hear a German Atlanticist basically call for decoupling with the US

It's so funny because Merz was a committed Atlanticist
Trump (who is currently mad at Chancellor Merz): "The United States is studying and reviewing the possible reduction of Troops in Germany, with a determination to be made over the next short period of time. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP"

Just FWI the Handelsblatt is traditionally a strongly Atlanticist paper.

And the most important thing about an ~economic war plan~ we could have is basically a common, integrated supply chain of critical minerals and defense products (energetics chips etc) / market for Team Atlanticist Democracy, unfortunately we currently blowing up Team Atlanticist Democracy

Note that these are the usually Atlanticist pro-American centre right parties. They have given up appeasing Trump.
Appears that the most recent negotiated EU-US trade deal is dead, with Renew Europe and EPP party leadership rejecting the deal in light of Trump’s recent threats.

It's also hard to express, on a really selfish personal level, how awful it is to see my twinned loves of Reconstruction constitutionalism and the New Deal-Atlanticist administrative state get ripped apart
Second Redemption is a profoundly bleak project and we're gonna drive back into hell
the death of 60 minutes and the rest of the VRA on the same night really brings home how the current conservative project is to kill the progress and ideals of the mid century

like i'm a dyed in the wool atlanticist. hell i've worked in both the UK and US government and am a dualie. this shit is fucking heart breaking and mind breaking to watch
honestly think I can now start to empathize with the liberal internationalists who watched Versailles and the League of Nations flop and die

I have nothing against America, btw. Always thought of myself as an atlanticist, actually. But the current rewriting of history is wild.

This is also something that the Atlanticist American right believes.

Not only is this crass, it is highly significant.

Radosław Sikorski is perhaps the most Atlanticist major politician in Europe.

And this is how he is now being publicly treated by US/Musk.

They do not want us to be their friends, they do not want us to be their allies.

TBH I think it's good that she's sitting on those panels and articulating a foreign policy vision that isn't vulgar Atlanticist militarism, Putin-friendly campism, or Jacksonian imperialist psychopathy.
anybody currently raging about Newsom needs to be stopped better get on board or I might think your outrage is a tad performative

Blimey. Asked about Trump, Merz says he’s in close contact with European leaders about becoming “independent” from US (and confesses “I never thought I’d say that on TV show”). Casts doubt on value of NATO summit in June.

This from a die-hard Atlanticist. Things are moving fast.

The UK now the least Atlanticist of the major European countries.
Do Europeans think it's more important to prioritise European autonomy (+) or preserve the US-Europe alliance (-)?

Absolutely.

My personal politics (fwiw) were/are Atlanticist, but its game over for all that now. UK/Can/Nor/EU have to eliminate or minimise all any dependency on US now.
March 9, 2025 at 6:15 PM
And as a life-long Atlanticist, such affirmations are painful.

And if UK were to have a nuclear deterrent, yes it should have been independent of the US.

In European politics, De Wever is the party ally of Meloni in the European Conservatives and Reformers, traditionally a very pro-atlanticist and (soft) Eurosceptic block:
There's @deweverbart.bsky.social dishing it out. Good to have this voiced very clearly.

It is encouraging to see the younger European generation pushing back against the Atlanticist old guard.

These peoples' time is over.
