I agree! It surprised me too. Do you think the guidelines will change in the future as more research supports plant-based protein? #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

I was surprised that the new Dietary Guidelines prioritize animal-based protein even though research has shown benefits from replacing some animal protein with plant protein. I assumed the guidelines would follow the strongest evidence more closely.

I found this interesting because I didn’t realize sustainability had been part of the Dietary Guidelines discussion for so long. It also makes me wonder how different factors can influence nutrition recommendations over time.@waiterich.bsky.social @beh353.bsky.social#beh353
I’m old enough to remember that in 2015, a detailed report by many scientists found that a dietary pattern higher in plants & lower in animal-based foods was better for both health & sustainability in the US.

USDA/HHS argued at the time that sustainability was “out of scope” of dietary guidelines.
U.S. dietary guidelines should emphasize beans and lentils as protein, proposal says
The report, from an advisory committee to the USDA, also suggests encouraging people to reduce their intake of sugary drinks and sodium and eat more whole grains.

I agree that there’s a lot of misinformation surrounding the Dietary Guidelines. I also didn’t realize how often people misunderstand the food pyramid and assume the foods at the top were meant to be prioritized, when they were actually meant to be limited. @beh353.bsky.social #beh353
Caught a clip of RFK Jrs YouTube cooking show and somehow we are 2 years in and he is still saying that the food industry bought out our dietary guidelines and put fruit loops at the top of the pyramid - not understanding still somehow that the top is the stuff to be minimized.

We often associate certain foods with certain times of day, but breakfast doesn't have to include only specific foods. I like this perspective a lot - more flexibility can make it easier to build enjoyable and nutritious meals! @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

This connects to what we learned this week about looking at the overall quality of someone’s diet instead of focusing on one nutrient. I also liked the focus on sustainability because a healthy diet should realistically fit into someone’s life. @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

It's so interesting that nutrition can heavily affect our oral health too. I usually think about food in terms of overall health, so this was a good reminder that what we eat can affect different parts of our health. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

I think this is interesting because our ancestors’ diets also varied depending on location and food availability. There probably wasn’t one single “caveman diet,” so it may be difficult to compare their eating patterns directly with modern dietary guidelines. @BEH353 #BEH353

After learning about Fad diets this week, those seem to address the “what you eat” in the topic of nutrition. These mindfulness tips address the “how you eat” and I agree that slowing down and being present about the plate in front of you is also important! @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

This article correlates with what we learned this week about following guidelines. It says not only should we avoid unnecessary sugars but also be cautious of carbohydrates with added sugars that stay in your mouth longer as they could cause tooth decay. @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

very insightful, I totally agree that we don't have to treat fat like a negative identity @beh353 #beh353

I completely agree. We should be able to enjoy food without guilt. Food should not be negstively viewed. Lets enjoy it! #beh353
Food = fuel AND joy (+ culture, experience, love, etc.). You’re allowed to eat without guilt. No burpees required.

It important to call something out, and this does it! Saying how the dietary guidelines are a mess right now, and providing a better guideline that focuses on what foods are nutritious and the importance of prep when it comes to food. Gotta give Texas their flowers y'all! @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

I think it's a good idea to try and enjoy and have fun when eating healthy! I like the idea of making breakfast and any meal in general into something thats fun, making the meal not just healthy and good for us but also have it be more enjoyable.

I didn’t realize noodles could be made from so many different ingredients besides wheat. I also think this reveals how noodles are an important part of many different cultures and cuisines around the world. @beh353.bsky.social @beh353 #beh353

I looked more into the paleo diet, which focuses on foods like meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, and nuts while avoiding grains, dairy, and processed foods. Is the paleo diet actually healthier than a balanced diet that includes all food groups? @beh353.bsky.social @beh353 #beh353

I found this interesting! I like how Texas created its own dietary guidelines with a focus on whole foods and balanced nutrition. The visual also makes the recommendations easier to understand. It's surprising to see how different state and federal guidelines can be! @beh353 #beh353

I think the strictness of the diet could make it difficult for people to follow consistently, especially if they have to maintain ketosis to see possible benefits. It makes me wonder if the potential benefits are worth how restrictive the diet can be. @beh353.bsky.social @beh353 #beh353

Feed the patient is much more important because it caters to the patients needs! This made me think about how nutrition recommendations can change depending on a person’s medical conditions. Nutrition care is not just following a set of rules! @beh353.bsky.social #beh353
The phrase "feed the gut" has served us well.

But "feed the patient" may be the more important principle.

Sometimes that means enteral nutrition. Sometimes it means parenteral nutrition.

Physiology should win over dogma.

One thing that surprised me was that the Dietary Guidelines are not mainly for consumers. They help shape federal nutrition programs like SNAP, WIC, and school meals. I didn’t realize they had such a broad impact. @BEH353 #BEH353

What are dietary guidelines? Aren’t they just made up labels? Unfortunately not. There’s a lot of research and data needed to create labels. I was surprised to know that they were not fixed and instead updated frequently. I want to pay more attention to notice them! @beh353.bsky.social #beh353
