“Nothing in this exquisite, shape-shifting novel is quite what it seems—words least of all.” Giles Harvey reviews Ben Lerner’s new book, “Transcription.” www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
The Ample Rewards of Ben Lerner’s Slender New Novel
In “Transcription,” a novel about memory and influence, an interview with an aging intellectual goes unrecorded. Or does it?

"I felt that my dad was already dead, that he wasn't suffering, and that his death, instead of severing our connection, had opened this channel between us, if that makes sense." My #SundaySentence is by Ben Lerner from his phenomenal novella Transcription. #Booksky #BenLerner

By turns wry and thought-provoking, themed around paternal relationships, this is a story of how memories transform — both themselves and the people carrying them — and of how much modern society relies on technology to capture, even validate, its human experiences.

My work, said the second smoker, was much more reminiscent of another poet, whose name l'd never heard, who fled Franco and died in exile,a poet whose capacity to dwell among contradictions without any violent will to resolution formally modeled utopian possibility.

My seat was facing opposite the direction of travel…I took a photo of the wintry, postindustrial landscape through my masked reflection as the train picked up speed, and then I checked and deleted the photo and shut my eyes and faced the past.

Leaving Ben Lerner's 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 off the Booker Long List has done every book on it an immense disservice. Because I can't be the only one comparing what they are reading to one of the best books of the decade, and some of them are coming up short. #BookerPrize #BenLerner #Transcriptions #booksky

I was destined to reproduce the bourgeois family…Or was…the lie… the identity of an addict…had the effort to prolong my adolescent experimentation indefinitely shaded imperceptibly into fearsome if mundane dependence, had mythomania become methomania?

Currently making my way through The Topeka School by Ben Lerner. It’s a bit of a slog at times, but there’s something intriguing about its writing style, debate, and cultural critique. Not the easiest read, but I’m sticking with it.

"TRANSCRIPTION succeeds because it dares, within notably narrow confines, to go places typically reserved for much longer novels, if not other, more abstract art forms entirely."

Not sure if it's a good idea to be reading 3 books at the same time but that's what's happening.

Some pairing these are making, the masculine violence study, which I didn’t expect, in Topeka and its scathing critique, which totally checks out, from Woolf. Both are brilliant btw. #booksky #virginiawoolf #benlerner

#topekaschool So much to digest. What a writer though #benlerner. The Jane subplot was really engaging and alive. I was scared of what was going to become of Darren. Still thinking about this one a few days after finishing. #thanksobama
