Two figures wearing suits look up at the camera. The person on the left has on a messy brown suit and tie, his hair also a mess. The person next to him wears a blue-sh black suit and tie. Their hair is lighter brown and skin more pale. A mass of things, mechanical and biological grow from their left arm, including but not limited to: an alligator head, dragon wing, motorcycle engine block, ceiling support beams, giant coconut crab legs and body, kitchen sink, brick wall, multiple chainsaws, bird wing, wolf head, jet engine, another human arm and torso, and a cube that's wearing the same suit and tie as the rest of that figure. A human ear is visible on the meatcube. Text reads "Book of CoL: The Ember Child." Curved and warped perspective of the exterior of a massive apartment complex. People, who do not entirely look human such as a Minotaur and an elf, watch as a pair of movers help Page Simmons carry boxes marked 'Scythian.' The minotaur has a barbecue pit on his balcony. The Elf has a number of potted plants. A sign on the building reads "Little Asgard Heights" below the design of tree with an intricate knot instead of branches. The movers look concerned. Page carries three boxes while each movie carries one. Page is a white person with light colored hair that's shaved on the back and sides but long on the top. They've also got a noticeable scar on their left bicep, that's visible under the cuff of their T-shirt sleeve. Two panels. The top panel features a giant skeleton knight, Thunderskull, wearing loose dark fabric, gloves, and armor. He has a skull head with a pair of short pointed horns emerging from the top of his cranium. Flames burn from his empty eye sockets. His left hand is in the air, crushing a solo style cup full of beer very messily. Page Simmons laughs in the foreground. Second Panel: A shorter figure, wearing the same armor, is collapsed on the ground clutching a visibly shattered arm and hand. He is a young latino man in his 20s, with brown skin and fluffy dark hair. He is also horrified. Page squats down next to Thunderskull, pointing at his injured arm. The solo style cup is on the floor as is a mess of liquid from the beer. In the background of this panel sits a dresser with a retro sound system on it. The toilet tissue aisle of a grocery store. Page Simmons stands, holding a small hand basket and a four pack of toilet paper. They wear a t-shirt that reads "Book of Secrets" and light colored jeans with tennis shoes. A long forked tail curls around them and leads to a nearly seven foot tall figure who excitedly points at something off camera. This is Eterna. She is very tall and also very curvy. She has on a dark long sleeve shirt with ruffled collar, a tight short skirt, and tall boots that come up just past her knees. Her ears are incredibly long and pointed. Her hair is dark, curly, and short. She has a pair of long curved horns that emerge from the top of her head and sweep back then up. She is bubbly and happy, excited to show her new neighbor around.

This is a trimmed down copy of my live book read of Book of CoL: The Ember Child, chapters 1 and 2, from my Twitch stream on 03-22-24 Book of CoL is my illustrated webnovel series that is free to read on Tapas! Ten years ago people around the world gained the ability to shapeshift to different degrees. Those with such powers become known as ‘Children of Loki’ or ‘CoLs’ as well as 'Children of our Lord’ or 'CooLs’ while some choose the secular term 'Mimics.’ Every day new CoLs, known as ‘Embers,’ gain powers but no CoL has ever been recorded below the age of 19. Detective Page Simmons is a CoL with the ability to become anyone and anything they want. They’re hired by Detective Windgate, to consult on a case regarding the first possible instance of a child CoL. Can Page and Detective Windgate get to the bottom of this mystery? In a world where the culprit could be anyone or anything what kind of detective do you turn to? Written by Sarah "Neila" Elkins Edited by Adam P. Panel 1: My original character Thunderskull from Book of CoL, a skeleton with two small horns on is head and flaming eyesockets, stands with a dark gray crop top hoodie on that features a heart shaped skull above the word "DADDY." His lower ribs, spine, and upper pelvis are visible above his jeans. He holds a cup of pink boba tea in one hand. He's having a great day. Panel 2: Close up of Thunderskull drinking the boba. Sound effect reads "SLURP!" Panel 3: Wide shot of Thunderskull throwing his head back declaring "Ahh Refreshing!" his formerly invisible stomach is now visible thanks to the boba tea swirling in it. Two onlookers stare. A tall one with great hair points and says "That's weird, bra." Panel 4: Thunderskull looks down, crying tears of fire while his boss, Page says "So, we're instituting a new rule because there have been some complaints. No exposed guts." Text at the bottom of the comic reads "@NeilaK20 Make A Terrible Comic Day 2026"

All the Cowboy Bebop jokes about my skeet shitposts made me think of when I drew Starling being thirsty in that Cowboy Bebop redraw a few months ago.

I had to make this today because the image absolutely would not leave my head and I couldn't focus on work as a result.

Please enjoy Starling from Book of CoL in this homage to Cowboy Bebop.

You can read about him in Book of CoL for free here:

Digital drawing of Detective Starling Windgate, a hot Korean American detective with his hair slicked back standing in a brightly lit hospital hallway. Text under him reads "I love the kind of woman that can kick my ass."

If you see this, post a monster.

Digital illustration of a gigantic shapeshift explosion. Blood and gore are flung away as the mass of flesh, swords, chainsaws, a pickup truck, kitchen sink, cellphone tower, support struts, giant crab legs, jet engines, bird wings, and massive gaping wolf mouth full of still more swords and chainsaws surrounds a small winged human wearing a white suit. This giant meatsplosion is also Page Simmons. They're fine but the guy they just exploded out of, is horrified. A signature reads "Sarah 'Neila' Elkins 2023"
